WD's "My Book" USB HD 500GB

Hello everyone.
I have two simple questions regarding this piece of hardware.

1.- Can I delete the software and stuff that comes preloaded with it? More than a matter of space, it's a matter of aesthetic. Honestly this is my first external HD, so I wanted to ask first to avoid deleting something that might be important for the unit.

2.- Is it safe to watch movies, play games, etc. from the unit on a constant basis? I have this feeling it may shorten it's life, since external units are not meant as internal replacements, but again, I wanted to ask since I don't know much about them.
