Evil No Allocated Space for External HD?

Hello :)

On Thursday I brought myself an 80GB HP Pocket media Drive. It was perfect, right price, right size, right amount of storage... But I've been wanting to partition it.

I was suggested to use the Disk Management utility in Windows to create the partitions. So anyway I got into disk management and followed the steps on the MS website ( How To Use Disk Management To Configure Basic Disks in Windows)

I got to this step
Quote:
1. In the Disk Management window, complete one of the following procedures, and then continue to step 2:
• To create a new partition, right-click unallocated space on the basic disk where you want to create the partition, and then click New Partition.
• To create a new logical drive in an extended partition, right-click free space on an extended partition where you want to create the logical drive, and then click New Logical Drive.
Since the disk is only one partition I would of had to have used option 1. But I could not do this because there is no unallocated space for this drive, even though I have 97% free.

So now I cannot create the partitions.

I do not want to use third party software. Its a waste of my time.

I've been as detailed as I can so I'm hoping you guys can help me.

Oh and if this helps, the disk is formatted to NTFS.

Thanks in advance

Re: No Allocated Space for External HD?

First, in disk managment step 1.. create Extended partition = full amount of drive space, then you create logical partions and format them.

Re: No Allocated Space for External HD?

I won't have to format my drive to do this will I.

Because if I do, in short, I'll be screwed.

You don't format the internal drive, the External HD you follow instructions I'd posted.

Re: No Allocated Space for External HD?

When I said drive I meant external.. Sorry.

So I will have to format the external?
Sorry, I'm not very catchy when it comes to hardware.

Also I don't see an option for what your asking me to do

external drive !!! First, in disk managment step 1.. create Extended partition = full amount of drive space, then you create logical partions and format them.

If you've formated the drive go into disk managment delete volume on the external drive first then preform instructions as posted.

Re: No Allocated Space for External HD?

I don't have any options to do any of that.

When right-clicking my external drive in drive management these are my options
Open
Explore
Change Drive Letter Paths
Format
Delete Logical Drive
Properties.

I'd posted "Delete Logical Drive" follow posted instruction adding the external drive... step1 create extended partition .. full drive size, then you create the logical drives / and format them.
