Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
I have just built a new computer. I installed windows on the hard drive but when it boots i get this message. I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, bootcfg /repair, chkdsk /r but still i get this message. The hard disk is working because it worked on other computer and also i was able to install windows xp on it. I dont know what is the problem. I also put hard disk on 1st to boot on my bios. I dont know what else to try. I did re partition my hard disk so could that be the problem?

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
sangdi, might seem like a dumb question, but have you checked the hard drive jumpers. Is it set to master/slave/ or cable select. If its the only hard drive installed, then set jumper to master.

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
Start here:
Bios setup menu. Set your boot order to: CDRom - 1st Floppy - 2nd Hard Disk - 3rd Then, in the same area slip down to Hard Drive Priority and set your drive with the OS to First in that list. SAve and exit...try it and post back.

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
sangdi and tumbleweed36,
Now I'm the one with the same problem, "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". I went ahead, like a dummy and completely deleted the recovery partition. Well, I did a 'restart" to see if it would boot now without going straight to the recovery part as it was doing before. Now, I cant even boot at all. This is what it says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows root>\system32\hal.dll please re-install a copy of the above file WTF did i do wrong? And how can I fix it? Worse comes to Worse and I have to re-install Windows XP, thats fine, but before doing that, is there a way I can at least boot into windows one last time to at least backup whatever files I haven't backed up. PLEASE HELP.............................. |

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
I didn't really loose any files or work because I'm a backup freak, but it was just the fat that I didn't want to have to install all my programs all over again. I was up till like 3AM last nite until I finally finished.

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
Hey mate and welcome to TSF...
I do not understand completely so could you be more specific: Did you assign a new letter to system partition??? Because I did that once: I accidentally installed windows Xp on D: partition, and I tried to change drive letter to be C: and I ended up installing XP again ^-^ If you did that, that is why your system wont boot...

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
Hey mate,
what make/model is your HDD??? Visit manufacturers web site and download testing tools to test HDD for possible bad sectors... Also, please check cables... Your HDD is SATA or PATA???

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
Hey mate,
before you purchase/get new motherboard, try new IDE cable...

Re: Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter
it's usually because you have not made the partition you installed on active
