hi, if I want to connect a laptop HDD to my desktop then...
what piece do I need? It's the ps3 HDD which I heard is a laptop HDD (I was about to post this in the gaming section forum but since it's specifically a HDD question, I'm posting it here). I saw this cable here, http://img.alibaba.com/photo/50922846/USB_to_IDE_SATA_Cable.jpg, will this do? I would also like to confirm that if the PS3 HDD is really a SATA connector. Thanks
Also, I'm trying to look for that cable but I can't find it

Re: hi, if I want to connect a laptop HDD to my desktop then...
Both of those cords should work. I'd recommend getting a case like these here http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092+1053807124&name=2.5%22
They let you hook the HDD up to your USB port and the case protects the HDD. Most cases allow for the HDD to be put in and taken out of the case easily, but read some of the reviews and decide which would be best for you. HOWEVER if you are planning on hooking your PS3 HDD to read the data on it, it can't be done (I don't think) I'm pretty sure that PS3 uses its own file system that can't be read by any windows or mac OS, so you'd be wasting you time if thats what you want to do. You'd have to reformat the HDD to a FAT or NTFS (for windows) file system to be able to save data to it, but then if you wanted to put it back in your PS3 you'd have to reformat it back to the PS3 file system for it to work again. EDIT: Oh, if you do go for the case make sure you get one with the SATA interface (if that is what the PS3 HDD is) Last edited by claycad; 07-08-2008 at 11:09 AM. |

Re: hi, if I want to connect a laptop HDD to my desktop then...
Yea, I'm just planning to hook up my ps3 to my computer to see if I can backup my save and then reformat it cause my ps3 hdd got corrupted by that 2.40 update. So it will only be like for a maximum of an hour that I'll be hooking up the HDD to my computer. After reading about the ps3 hdd, I will have to make sure the file system is in FAT32 format cause that's what the ps3 recognize.

Re: hi, if I want to connect a laptop HDD to my desktop then...
I don't have a PS3 so I can't test this, but from what I've been reading is the PS3 can recognize external devices such as HDD or thumb drives that are formatted in FAT32, but the HDD that comes with the PS3 is not in the FAT32 file format, it is its own proprietary format and can't be hooked to your PC and be read. To back up your data you would have to attach a FAT32 formated external device to your PS3 and copy the files from your PS3 to the external device. I've found several articles and forums and they all say that the PS3 HDD isn't FAT32 and can't be read by a PC. PS3 can read FAT32 external devices though. I guess if you wouldn't mind spending the money for an external enclosure you could try it for yourself to see, like I said I don't have a PS3 so I can't test it. good luck though.
