Hard drive DOA?

I was using my computer one day clearing all the crap from my desktop I had files all over the place so I was dragging them to the recycle bin and bam blue screen of death I rebooted and I hear a aweful Clicking noise from my hard drive then I got a error "error reading disc" so I purchased a new hard drive I plugged it in and this hard drive clicks and I keep getting errors like SATA primary drive 0 not found. Can you order wrong hard drives or does the clicking noise mean my hard drive is dead(the new one clicks as well as the old one) I have a dell 4600 with win xp media edition. Could you guys tell me if This hard drive will work in my desktop thankyou. sorry for the story and if you need more info just ask Ill be more then happy to give you it.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

Hi

Since you have two clicking HDDs I would think the power supply or the motherboard is bad.
But - it could be as simple as a bad cable. Try replacing it.

Before you RMA or discard the HDDs - test them in another computer.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

THe problem is I don't have another computer that supports SATA drives at all. If the harddrive clicks at all is that a good sign at all? I mean It seems like a sound other then the sound of it spinning would be bad.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

A constantly clicking HDD is bad or doesn't get sufficient power.
Replace the SATA cable and try different power plugs for the HDD.
Run diagnostic tools from the hard drive manufacturer.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

Ok I have tried running diagnostics I have a Western Digital Caviar SE 160g. THe original was a seagate 160g. But when the new hard drive is connected to the motherboard It says Error Auto-Sensing drive 0 Then when It says press any key to contine It reads SATA primary drive 0 not found.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

Clear CMOS:
Get rid of static electricity by touching a radiator or bare metal on the computer case.
Then unplug the computer from the wall outlet and open the case.
Remove the little "coin-like" battery on the motherboard.
Move the "clear CMOS" jumper on the motherboard from pins 1&2 to pins 2&3.
Wait 30 minutes.
Replace the jumper to pins 1&2.
Put the battery back.
Close the case and start the computer.
Enter BIOS and choose "Load setup defaults" (or something similar) - save and exit BIOS.

Again - replace the SATA cable.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

I checked my motherboard for the cmos jumper but I couldn't locate it on this board.

--EDIT

Nevermind I believe it was labeled CLR password mode not CMOS

Re: Hard drive DOA?

Sorry for the double post but this is a update. I tried that no success, I still can't find someone that carries a sata data cable. Radio shack and bestbuy and my local pc places don't have extra's on hand. I might just send the hd back to newegg and order a sata cable from bestbuy.

Re: Hard drive DOA?

A PC shop that doesn't have SATA cables???

I would try the HDD in a known good PC before sending it back - perhaps one of the local PC places could do that for free (they only have to check if it's clicking).
