[SOLVED] C: drive right-click menu

When I right-click on the C: drive i'm prompted to install and Easy Creator CD maker program instead of the right-click menu. After that I cancel the installer I can still access the right-click menu.

Have you virus scanned to eliminate the possibility of hidden nasties?

Re: C: drive right-click menu

Im trying to reimage a new computer with acronis and before doing so I wanted to up grade to WIN XP PRO SP3. There wew a few files that the SP3 intsaller prompted "Access Denied" errors on. I repaired permissions with a progream called Dial-a-fix and was able to upgrade to SP3. Now when I right-click on the C: drive i'm prompted to install and Esay Creator CD maker program instead of the right-click menu. After that I cancel the installer I can still access the right-click menu.

Then when I try to clone I get an error similar too " cannot access the Harddrive."

I am in the admin user. It seems like the wrong program is selecting the harddrive or easy cd creator is chosen to open drives???

I tried to repair permissions again and there was an error i failed to copy but it read some thing like "problem with drive....... would you like windows to be the default program...." I'm not sure the error is erroneus or legit....

...yes i scanned with AVG 8.0 it's clean. I also repaired the registry...

Re: C: drive right-click menu

Repaired the registry with what? Only qualified Technicians, or those who truly are a fountain of knowledge should do anything with the registry!! Microsoft even suggest to their Techs not to mess with it, as it can kill a lot of functions, to the point nothing works.
If you have a windows disk, put it in, reboot, wait for the menu to appear after it loads all the drivers, and press R.
You will be taken to the Recovery Console....type

chkdsk drive: /p /r

where drive: is your drive letter.
This may take a while, but should find any physical issues with your drive.
Once complete, post back and tell me how it goes.

Re: C: drive right-click menu

p.s. I had nothing but problems with SP3. It never worked from the moment I applied it. So instead I have put it on the ignore list. Its not worth my time to try and get it working properly as SP2 works a treat anyway.

Re: C: drive right-click menu

Mac, I had a very similar issue. My right clicks would prompt a pop-up asking me to install some search program from my A:drive. My anti-virus couldn't spot it.
I downloaded some Anti-Malware tools and they sorted it.

Stressfreesoul,
Don't you have the option in Add/Remove Programs to uninstall SP3? I do, though I won't be using it.

Re: C: drive right-click menu

I already un-installed it. About 3 minutes after I installed it. As I said, I'll try it again sometime. It was probably only a silly problem anyway, but as my screen name suggests, I am stress free and I'd like to keep it that way

Re: C: drive right-click menu

Found the answer. Install the windows installer cleanup utility.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
NOTE: installs the program into ALL Programs (or Programs on some systems)
NOTE: just open the utility and deleted the unwanted program.
