[SOLVED] 500 gb wd external HDD is only registering 133gb space

Hello everyone.

I can't figure out why my new WD external HDD is only recognizing 133 GB of space. I am running XP media center edition with sp2. I need to capture more video off my camera, but now have no where to put it. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi

Sounds like your computer doesn't support 48-bit LBA.
What does Disk management say about the drive?
(Right click "My computer" > choose "Manage" > Disk Management)

What computer do you have?

It says My Book G 465.76 GB FAT 32 Healthy.

Hand built P5N-D asus mobo, intel core two guad, nvidia 9800 gtx 512 vid card, 2 gig ram (taken from old dell), 500 watt psup, liteon HDD 150 GB (taken from an old dell computer), windows xp media center sp2

Any unallocated space on the HDD?

Your computer is underpowered - get a quality 650W PSU.
Try the HDD with another computer to see if the full capacity is recognized.

I'm sorry...what do you mean by unallocated space?
And I have a atec psup,...what brand do you suggest?
I'm am trying it on a different computer and putting stuff on it right now.

Ok I plugged it into the other computer and it allowed me to go past 133 GB. The strange thing is that my other computer has the same operating system. Its a far less superior computer as well. So what do you think my next step should be?

Sounds like you haven't installed any service packs for XP on the new machine.
You need at least service pack 1 to use HDDs larger than 137GB.

Unallocated space = parts of the hard drive that haven't been formatted.

Your MyBook is disk 4 (G:), right???
That drive is registered as 465GB (= 500 GB in Windows) with no unallocated space.

There is no 133GB drive. Which PC is the screenshot from?

ok here is what I did...from the begining..
origionally I tryed to fill up the disk 4 (G:) book (yes, that is right) on my main computer, the one that I just built, the one that I took the screen shot from and it would not go past 133 gb. I found that out because I tryed putting an 11GB movie file on it and it stopped half way and said there was not enough disk space. I checked and it stopped on 133gb. I then proceeded to open this thread. I then told you what disk management said..., which is what it says now, but it wasn't going past 133 anyway.
I then tryed filling up the book's memory on my secondary computer. It worked. I then deleted all that extra stuff that I put on there while trying to test it and reconnected it to my main computer...the one that it is having problems with. I then gave you the screen shot. It said the same thing that it did earlier. I am now trying to fill it up again on my main computer to see if it is just screwing with me. Thats what has confused me....it has never read 133 GB.......but that is all it will take...

I will let you know what happens

If you're trying to store files larger than 4GB on the drive you won't succeed.
The HDDs file system is FAT32 (which max file size is 4GB). To store larger files the drive should be formatted as NTFS.

No need to apologize.

You can change the drive's file system in Disk management.
To do that you need to format the drive - and that will erase all files on the drive.
