Can't boot XP Install CD when HDD is plugged in.
Hi. I'm having an issue with my IDE DVD ROM drive and IDE HDD. I can boot into my XP install CD when the HDD is disconnected, but not when it is connected. And since I can only boot the disc without the hard drive attached, I can't install XP. I think there may be an issue with my jumpers, but I don't know how to mess with those. :(

Re: Can't boot XP Install CD when HDD is plugged in.
I think if you just went into your computers BIOS and changed the boot sequence so the CD-ROM booted first it would fix your problem.

Re: Can't boot XP Install CD when HDD is plugged in.
Hi mate,
Go to BIOS and check if HDD is visible when it is connected with DVD-ROM... Are they on same IDE cable??? If not do this: It is recommended to separate HDD and DVD-ROM to use different IDE cables... On DVD-ROM usually there is some notifications above place where you put jumpers... Make sure DVD-ROM is set to be master... Also, on HDD there must be notifications about setting jumpers properly... set it for HDD to be slave... Now go to the BIOS and check if HDD is visible now... Let us know what you did... Hope this will help you mate...

Re: Can't boot XP Install CD when HDD is plugged in.
Thanks. I know how to use the bios settings, which is why i thought it was the jumpers. I do have them both on the same IDE cable, I really have no other choice with them both being IDE and only having one IDE plug on the monitor.
Edit: No instructions with the HDD or DVD-R, both were OEM. Last edited by outermon : 07-03-2008 at 05:07 PM. |

Re: Can't boot XP Install CD when HDD is plugged in.
Hey mate,
How long you have been experiencing this problem??? How did you use your PC before??? What make/model is your HDD and DVD-ROM??? You did not say is HDD visible in BIOS??? If your HDD is healthy, then you definately have jumper issue...
