Soft Switch AX5/PX5/TX5 motherboard

I recently acquired a second-hand computer form a business friends, he asked me to take all his personal details off the hard drive, which I did by formatting the drive. I have now tried to formats the hard drive to install Windows XP, but it comes up with an error. The set-up cannot access this disc.

Address FC450386 base at FC427000 date stamp 3B7D8507.

The hard drive is an I B. M. Deskstar. capacity 41 gigabytes.
Can anyone help or is the drive under serviceable

Do you know which model you have? i.e 60GXP, 75GXP etc...Is the drive making any weird noises? A little bit of digging shows that older Deskstar models are prone to failure, although if it says it can't access the disc, it may be a problem with the optical drive or the disc itself

No noise from drive just an normal hum.don't know what 60GXP means.Hard drive model IC35l04lAVER07-0 ATA/IDE.MAY-2001.drive was working well befor I formated it to clear disk.

Formatting does not remove sensitive data. it can still be recovered because it was never overwritten.

Use dban to clear the entire drive, and try formatting it again with a full format - this will catch any bad sectors and mark them so that the computer doesn't try to use them.

The Deskstar models were often referred to as 'deathstar' because they were in fact more prone to failure than other drive models of the time. I definitely wouldn't put any important data on this drive.

Edited: XP is not listed on Hitachi's compatability summary, but the summary is pretty old so i'm not sure if XP will work or not. Fox or another member of the hardware team could tell you better than I could. Here's the summary from their website:

What OS was loaded before you formatted?

Yes the os was working and use in a business. I formated the disk and then tried to put my own xp disk in

Was XP the operating system on the hard drive before you formatted it?

I'd be surprised if it weren't supported. I have had XP running on disks as small as 1GB. Not that they run particularly fast, but they run :)

Definitely do the full format, and scan the disk once you get it up and running to see what condition it's in. Might want to check the S.M.A.R.T. stats also.
