No memory and no data??? Hard drive malfunction or vista malfunction?

Hi peps,

I would really appreciate help with this one as I don't really want to reformat my hard drive (again). The story is that yesterday I decided my cpu (vaio fe laptop) was running to slow I've had it for well over a year now and cleaning was having limited benefits. So I reformate the master hd and reinstalled vista. Everything was fine at this point. yeay!

However when I plug in the external hard drive which had my 3 hour old backup of data stored on it something went wrong. Although the harddrive seems to function fine as it did before the cpu does not register anything on it 0 bytes used and 0 bytes avalible. also I have lost my SD card drive too.

The external hard drive is a WD premium book 250gb, it is formatted as NTFS. The CPU tells me the driver software is up todate and I've already been on the wd website. A few more things.
I changed the CPU name and profile name.
Also the vaio updater is gone too
It is possible the hard drive letter changed but I can't be sure if it has and I cant remeber how to change this if need be. Finally a message tells me to reformate the HD no way am I doing that! I already lost 200gb in past due to cpu struggling with formate.

Any help i would be grateful of
thanks
