[SOLVED] Problem installing Windows XP Pro 64-bit
Hi All -
I have a refurbished computer from HP that I'm trying to install Windows XP Professional x64 Edition onto, but I keep getting an error message. The computer is an xw8400. It came with an 80 gb SATA drive, a single dual-core Xeon processor, 2 gb of RAM (2 X 1 gb) and Windows XP Home installed. Before trying to install the 64 bit OS, I replaced the processor with two quad core Xeons from HP (5345 processors, 2.33 gHz), and added two 2 gb memory modules (left the originals in slots 1 & 3, put the new ones in slots 5 & 7 as per HP's manual). The computer also has an nVidia Quadro FX3500 video card which I installed, but haven't loaded any drivers, since I was going to replace the OS anyways. First attempt to install the OS, booting from the install CD resulted in a blue screen with the message "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time......", check for viruses, run check disk and the technical information: "*** Stop: 0x0000007b" and some more long number strings in parentheses. Talked to Microsoft, and they said it was because it had a SATA system drive, and the install disc didn't have drivers to address it, so I could either put in a PATA drive to install to, or get the appropriate drivers on a floppy and have the installer load it while booting. Tried both, and get exactly the same error message screen. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? Thanks! Russ |

Re: [SOLVED] Problem installing Windows XP Pro 64-bit
Finally got a call back from Microsoft.... again.
Turns out the optical drive was also SATA, and I would have had to locate more drivers to have it load while booting, or just hook up an IDE optical drive to boot from. Hooked up the IDE optical and HDD, and it loaded very nicely! |
