Model#: WD1200U017-003
At first when I plugged it up it automatically popped up with options on how to open the files it contained. From one day to another it no longer shows anything. The drivers are installed and Vista reads that it is connected to the USB port but I cannot access it. I've browsed here and there and I've read that it needs to be 'formatted'. Why wasn't this something that popped up when I first installed it? - Was this my fault? If so, can I still salvage the information that is in it? ![]() Please help me with this! |

Re: WD External HD does not show up anymore.
Welcome to TSF.
![]() Have you saved files on the drive? If so, it's already formatted. With the drive connected - open Disk management (Right click "My computer" > choose "Manage" > Disk Management) and post a screenshot of that window. How to post a screenshot. |

Re: WD External HD does not show up anymore.
Thank you.
Yes, I've saved files on it. I've actually hard this drive for over a year. And last week my laptop was diagnosed with a virus I couldn't get rid of. I restored back to factory settings. But before I did that I copied all my photos, music and videos to my external WD drive. When I rebooted I plugged it up and downloaded my photos from the external to the laptop. A few days later I replugged it to get the music and it wouldn't show up. Last edited by smmy195; 06-18-2008 at 11:27 AM. |

Re: WD External HD does not show up anymore.
I am connecting it directly to a USB port on the laptop, no hub.
I changed the cable but no difference. I do notice however that everytime I switch the USB port, the device installs the drivers all over again. - Like if it was the first time... |

Re: WD External HD does not show up anymore.
I have tried it with another computer and it does the exact same thing.
And yes, other USB devices work just fine with both my computers. PS I wont be able to get online until Friday night so if you reply and don't get an answer from me know that I am not home. I am very interested in fixing this issue however. thank you for all your help in advance. I will be back. |

Re: WD External HD does not show up anymore.
It has to be a bad connection or the drive's power source is faulty.
The following will void the warranty: Check the connections inside the drive enclosure. Even better - take the drive out and mount inside a desktop PC. Or, you could try some data recovery programs: GetDataBack Recuva Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier |
