[SOLVED] lost folders & files
Hello,
after searching the web about this problem it seems that it is very common, today when i powered up my laptop and went to my external hard drive to play some music i noticed about 5 folders missing that contained 1000's of files, so i ran some undelete software to no avail, then i selected hidden files and folders to be seen and came across the found.000 directory that contained 38 .chk folders, i started browsing these folders and started seeing the files i was missing and loads of other files and dll files and stuff, not knowing what had happened and not checking up on it i simply renamed the .chk folders that had my files in them to the original folder names. Now i cannot access any of these folders , when i try i get a warning saying (folder-name)is not accessible access denied. i ran chkdsk on the drive at the next re-boot, it took about 2 hours, and said it had fixed cluster problems on numerous files, then chkdsk said that it could not continue because there was not enough room on the drive even though there is 20gb available. i think i made it worse when i renamed those .chk folders. I can see these folders but that is all, when i check the properties of said folders it says that they contain 0 files and 0 folders. i think i have found out why the hard drive has ended up like this because i noticed that the usb port that it was connected to is kind of loose and the the usb plug of the hard drive was moving causing it to lose power, this could of been happening for a few hours which im sure would make toast of the drive if it was trying to read or write any data..any help would be much appreciated, i would really like to slavage some of these files Last edited by n0ka; 06-17-2008 at 07:31 PM. |

Re: lost folders & files
Thanks for replying, i have fixed the usb problem with an extra hub with 4 usb connections, and i found a trial of a very good program which i then purchased called file scavenger, it can recover deleted files and corrupt files, and files from corrupt file systems and it worked really well and was very easy, its reassuring to know that i can probably recover most things now if it ever happens again
