Vista asks to format my external hard drive!

I have a new HP Pavilion with genuine Windows Vista Premuim Home Edition. I tried to connect my Kaser 250GB (WD) USB 2.0 external hard drive where I have my material. The Vista recognizes the HD but requires to format it!

I tried to connect it directly (IDE). I tried also to restart the computer when the hard disk is connected and on. I also tried with XP but all these did not help.

Interestingly, my previous computer was also HP pavilion with Vista!

Any help?
