Acces NTFS partition with dos???

Hello everybody,

windows won't start and when I try to repair the system with the XP cd the computer freezes too.
So I tried to format the HDD but it won't let me since MS-Dos does not support NTFS partitions.

Does anybody know what to do when no acces to windows? I just wanna clean the whole disk and install windows new.

Re: Acces NTFS partition with dos???

Welcome to TSF.

Boot the computer with the XP disc and start a new installation.
During the install you'll be able to format the drive/partition.

If that doesn't work - try Parted Magic.

Re: Acces NTFS partition with dos???

The problem is the computer doesn't even boot into windows, the screen frezzes before and when I try to install windows again it starts the installation normally till about 40% and then error pop up tellin me that specific files can't be copied.
Could it be that the disk is just damaged since I tried to install xp with two different cd's and vista and all the installations failed during the process.

Any idea what that could be or how i can just clean up the whole HDD since I can't format over Dos because of the NTFS format.

Thanks!!

Re: Acces NTFS partition with dos???

More likely an HDD error. Run diagnostic tools from the HDD manufacturer.

Re: Acces NTFS partition with dos???

Avira NTFS4DOS enables access to NTFS drives for MS-DOS and other DOS-based operating systems under a new drive letter for applications.

Look at the free tools at the bottom left. There are others that might help too.

Although NTFS4DOS is no longer supported, I do know of someone who has used it successfully to access NTFS drives
.
