How to reformat a Toshiba U3 Thumb Drive?

Purchased a USB Thumb drive to use as an extra storage space, not as a billboard for Toshiba's advertising nor for games (I don't have time for them). How can I reformat this drive to just make it blank? The standard routine ("My computer/select drive/ right click "Format disk") does not work. I even tried rubbing it up against a magnet but nothing erased.

Magnet's don't affect solid state memory. The right click method should work. What is the problem with it?

(a) The programs start up as soon as the thumb drive is inserted in the computer.
(b) Right-click produces the message that "disk cannot be formatted as it is in use!"
(c) Holding down SHIFT key does not prevent the program from auto starting.

The only way to "Exit the program" is to select "Eject." Obviously, Toshiba wants to ensure you buy their additional games and other crap offered. I suppose the question really is, "How does one erase a solid state USB thumbdrive?"
