[SOLVED] Boot up problem...

I got home from work last night only to be told by my sister that the family computer won't start. I switch it on and while the Windows loading screen is on it changes to a blue screen with the following...

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x87352838,0xc0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)
The part in the middle of the quote tells me to restart, and make sure any new hardware is properly installed. Problem is, I can't even restart in safe mode to check that. It also talks about disabling BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

My brother just installed his printer to the computer, I wish I knew why because he didn't need to, but it seems to be the only anomaly in the computer's processes for the day. I only played some Football Manager and my sister did some homework the day before all this started.

Re: Boot up problem...

Just a bump as it's been 5 days... I'm sure I originally posted this in XP help so I think it's been moved here.

That said, I just turned on the computer again and the screen came up again, just that the numbers were different...

Re: Boot up problem...

First, I would try clearing the CMOS and see if that helps you to get in to the computer. If you do, then do a system restore to get back to when it worked.

Second possible solution:

If that does not help, then most likely you might have a boot.ini file that is corrupt. Here are some general comments about that issue:

When booting up to Windows XP you may get an error that reads: "Unmountable Boot Volume".

This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up. Here is a possible remedy:

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the "Welcome to setup" message, press the letter R.
You will then get a DOS prompt.
Then type: chkdsk /p [enter]
When that is done type: fixboot [enter]
Type: Y at the next prompt [enter]
Then type: exit [enter]
The system will now reboot into Windows.

If for some reason that didn't work, you can boot to the recovery console (example above).
Type: "chkdsk /r" [enter]
When done type: exit [enter].
This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Re: Boot up problem...

I'm an idiot. I spent all this time trying to get my uncle to find his XP discs in order to do this check, and totally forgot to search on the method in case it didn't need the discs.

Holding Delete on turning on the computer seems to have done something, it's managed to get past the unmountable boot volume stage and is doing a chkdsk right now. The volume is apparently dirty.

...and now it seems to be working. Thanks for the help, even if it took me months to actually follow through on it.
