System won't boot from CD-ROM

Hi Guys,

Greetings and Happy Mother's Day to all our lovely mothers of the world.

I've been having this problem with system booting from the HDD instead of the CD-ROM (xp sp2) even when the boot order changes are made and saved in the setup. Is this peculiar to certain "BIOSes" or is there some other reason which I should know. The CD is fine. I've booted from it on other systems. I'm sure someone here has a suggestion. You have never failed me.

Thanks and Hope you got your mommy something extra special this year.

Re: System won't boot from CD-ROM

Thank you, Terrister and Dai for promptly responding to my post. However, I think I should expand on my original post. What I am attempting is a clean re-installation of windows XP. I've already got xp running on the system. So I entered the bios and changed the boot order to boot to CD-ROM and disabled all other options. Desired changes are saved and system restarted. CD is bootable, is in the drive, and the CD drive is operational. However, the system continues to boot to the HDD.

BIOS Version/Date :Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG, 9/5/2007
SMBIOS Version 2.4

Re: System won't boot from CD-ROM

Do you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt?

If you have more than one Optical drive, try with the install cd in the other one

Re: System won't boot from CD-ROM

Rich,

No. I don't see the "press any key to boot from CD" prompt, it goes straight to the HDD. I have tried the other optical drive on the system with same result. I've also tried another bootable CD, but i still can't boot from it.

Thanks

Re: System won't boot from CD-ROM

Thanks Dai... But the system is not having a problem recognizing the opticals drives when xp boots up. I'm trying to boot from the cd not from the HDD. Does it even matter whether I've got a HDD hooked up to the system to be able to boot from CD. (Windows)Registry settings are saved on the HDD. I DO NOT want to boot from the HDD.

I'm thinking it's more of a BIOS issue.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Re: System won't boot from CD-ROM

Go back into BIOS . . look around for anything like Silent Boot or Quick Boot and disable it.
Then see if you get the "Press any key . . . " prompt. If not, consider trying a new cd drive
