Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
I'm not sure which paragraph you are referring to i'm afraid.
I used the Sea-Tools ISO from the manufacturer's website, and burnt to disk using imgburn at 1x, there were no problems in that regard at all, but if you are recommending that software instead then i'll try that one as well. Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
Uploader Notes
Burn iso to blank CD. To use the utility, boot to the CD. Per Maxtor's website, PowerMax v4.21 will not detect ATA or SATA hard disks connected to embedded or add in RAID controllers, NVIDIA Force 3, Force 4, VIA KT600 & KT800 chipsets. If the hard disk is connected to an unsupported controller, it will have to be moved to an alternate system or controller for diagnosis.

Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
Prior to running the PwrMaxEn software this is way the drive's are set up,
WD as Master on CS, on the black slot at end of the cable Maxtor as Slave on CS, on the grey middle slot of the cable There was no clicking on the Slave, but it wasn't detected on the splash screen, yet it was seen in the BIOS as a Sabre. When i set the first boot device as the DVD ROM and rebooted the slave started to click. The software loads and i press F8 to continue, the Maxtor did click a few times while the software was looking for HDD's. The software showed the WD HDD, and the DVD RW/DVD ROM's but not the Maxtor. Next test this is the set up of the drive's, WD as Master on standard jumper setting's, with slave present Maxtor as Slave, with no jumper On start up the slave clicks but isn't detected. Pressed F8 to run the software, neither HDD is found but the software has detected both of the optical drive's. For the sake of i tried these settings as well, WD as Master on standard settings with slave present Maxtor as Master Surprise surprise neither drive was detected. WD as Master on cable select Maxtor as Master Surprise surprise neither drive was detected on splash screen, but the slave clicks. I disconnected the slave totally and started up the pc, and the WD is seen straight away with no delay, the jumper is set to cable select in this instance. Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
Let's stick with this for a bit.
1st step: On IDE #1 Western Digital as Master with Slave and jumpers set that way and on the end of the ribbon cable. Maxtor set as Slave with jumpers set that way (A good many Maxtor models have jumpers set to slave and not removed), and on the middle of the ribbon cable. Note: [u]You do need to check that, because as my memory goes, Maxtor does not always on all models have the jumpers removed for either setting. 2nd Step: Bios setup menu in the MAIN area, you need to have the detection set in the Primary and Secondary IDE Master/Slave heading items set to AUTO. 3rd Step: Bios setup menu in the BOOT main heading. You need to set the Boot Order to: CDrom - 1st Floppy - 2nd (if you have one) Hard Drive - 3rd 4th Step: Still in the Bios setup menu in the BOOT Main Heading. You need to scroll down to the Hard Disk Drives area and make sure that Hard Drive Priority is set to the boot drive FIRST. Don't forget to save any settings that you have changed in all these areas. Post back with what happens and I know you have done a few of these, but there has to be something we have basically missed, so just trying to cover all bases.

Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
The Maxtor drive has 9 pin 's in the jumper area, with a jumper built in to pin 1, this seem's to be a part of the mould so i won't be able to remove it.
I've just seen a picture with the above mentioned jumper in that place. That pin position appear's to be the jumper position for slave. So if that is correct then it's been jumpered to be slave along. Which is even more annoying for me ![]() I'll make the step's that you recommended earlier. Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
I've made the recommendation's in the BIOS and set up the Maxtor as slave (had no choice because of the un-removable jumper).
In regard to step 2, all the Cylinders, Heads, Sectors and Maximum Capacity information is there for the WD HDD. But even though the Maxtor is seen in the BIOS (as a Sabre) none of the above information is available. After saving the change's and rebooting, the Maxtor click's immediately but doesn't get detected on the splash screen. |

Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
If this is your Maxtor drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822144237
Then, I believe, the jumper should be on pins 1 & 3 to make it slave - like this: max.gif |

Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
Thanks for the help everyone!
Yes eneles that is my drive , i set the jumper on the Maxtor on pin's 1 + 3 with the jumper on the WD HDD set as Master W/Slave Present. The Maxtor was detected on the splash screen, got no clicking from the drive but had the Pri Slave HDD Error. Then tried the drives on the Cable Select jumper option, the Maxtor wasn't detected on the first boot, but when i tried again it was detected but gave the Pri Slave HDD Error. There was no clicking from the Maxtor. I also tried with no jumper on the WD at all, and with the jumper set on the Maxtor at the Slave position. Both got detected, no clicking from the Maxtor but got the Pri Slave HDD Error. Lastly i set the jumper on the Maxtor at the 'Slave W/CLJ' option, with the WD jumper set at pins 5 + 6 'Master W/Slave Present' option, both of the drive's were detected and got the Pri Slave HDD Error. With no clicking from the Maxtor. It's safe to say that this is driving me round the bend at this point! But i really appreciate all the help ![]() dai thanks for the link i'm going to go through the whole lot i think, to try and get this resolved, or die trying! I'm also thinking of trying a different manufacturers HD as the Master. My thinking is that maybe the WD and the Maxtor aren't compatible? ![]() |

Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
Today the set up regarding the jumper setting's is like this,
WD set as Master on cable select Maxtor set as Slave on cable select (This set up has been tried before, but didn't work then) I can now see the drive ![]() I also know from past experience with this particular HD, that it's just as likely to disappear at the next reboot ![]() I'd like to thank each and everyone one of you, that has made the effort and very kindly offered their time, help and knowledge. I'll talk to you the next time it disappears! Last edited by TD9 : 05-12-2008 at 04:17 AM. |

Re: Maxtor 7L300R0 "pri slave hdd error"
If your motherboard has two IDE channels - try the HDDs on separate channels.
And - maybe getting a "real" Windows version would help. ![]() |

I've used my original XP Pro sp2 disk on this system with the current spec, and eventually the "pri slave hdd error" problem arose again. Which is why i was/am considering buying a new motherboard, i'm convinced that the IDE controller on the motherboard is a problem in some shape or form ![]() |
