please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
while restarting my computer for an anti-virus update, windows ran something that claimed to be verifying the files on my hard drive? when windows next booted up, my WD 320 GB hard drive is now claiming to be RAW and is 0 bytes free 0 bytes used. it was previously FAT32 and worked very well for storing everything i needed (i have a small internal hard drive, my PC was built in 04).
i have a ton of music, recordings, hard to find tv shows, software, etc. on the drive and BADLY want them back (i actually study alot of the music...). what can i do???? thanks a ton in advance for any help you can offer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136169 that's the exact drive I have, i'm pretty sure. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
How is the drive connected to the computer? USB?
Try another cable and different ports. Please post a screenshot of Disk management. How to post a screenshot. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
yes, it's USB. tried some other ports and tried installing the firewire driver and using it, but it also did not show up.
actually... i tried getting rid of the current driver to try to reinstall it from scratch and now it says USB device not recognized. i'm trying to find the driver that windows was using or a replacement one... i don't know where disk management is either. sorry. the model is WD3200D032-000 found that physically on the hardware Last edited by adam245 : 05-07-2008 at 02:05 PM. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
Start > Settings > Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk management.
Run chkdsk on the drive where Windows is installed: Right click the drive in "My computer" >> Properties >> Tools >> Check now. Tick both options and click "Start": ![]() Also - Run the System File Checker: Click Start >> Run >> Type sfc /scannow (note space after sfc), then click OK. You will/may be asked to insert your Windows disc. The file check may take a while to finish. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
You don't need an extra driver - Windows has it built-in.
Run chkdsk and sfc /scannow to see if Windows is OK. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
Open Device manager (To open Device manager: Click Start >> Run >> Type devmgmt.msc and click OK).
Any yellow or red marks there? Click "Universal serial bus controllers" >> Uninstall all "Universal serial bus controllers" (right click) >> restart and let Windows reinstall the USB controllers >> connect the drive. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
there was a red mark on enhanced controller. i think i disabled that forever ago when my usb's started acting crazy. my computer's been slightly buggy every since i built it...
i'm still getting a "USB device not recognized" message. even tho yesterday until quite late at night it was working fine... i tried doing a system restore, but to no avail. |

Re: please help! XP changed my drive from FAT32 to RAW
I think you have to repair the XP installation before we can fix the HDD.
Is there a retail XP disc with SP2 you can borrow? It has to be the same version as your XP - Home/Pro. And scan your computer with Kaspersky's online scanner. Last edited by eneles : 05-07-2008 at 03:22 PM. |
