Can I add a hard drive with saved Data to my current PC

Hey all!

Ok, My partner has a computer that has been officially put to rest due to far to many issues and errors with it. We didnt get a chance to pull any of the information off from the Hard Drive, and I want to put this inot my PC whilst retaining all the information on both my drive and hers.

Is this possible? If so, what do I need to do?

Just incase people need to know, my PC is currently runnning on the following

Windows Xp,
Maxtor 6Y080LO hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce TI 4200 Graphics
AMD athalon (XP) 2600+

And the drive I want to put in is a

Seagate Barracuda ATA IV

Thanks all

Re: Can I add a hard drive with saved Data to my current PC

1. Does you have a spare plug on your current ata cable. I expect that your system also has a CD installed.
2. You are in good shape. The way ata works is you can have 2 devices per channel. Most systems come with 2 channels (4 devices are possible). as above if you have a spare connector you may just have to plug it in and you are off and running.
3. If that fails you may have to change the mode the two disks us when they are on the same cable / channel. If both disks are set to cable select then your master disk should be at the far end of the cable. Far away from the mother board and disk 2 is near the mother board.
4. If that still does not work set you original hard disk jumper to the MA position (Master)
set the other disk to the slave position.

If all of this is to geekey for you you cna purchase a USB connection kit/cable.

I would recommend moving the files you want and remove the old drive. Your pictures and files are golden. the old system may can cause you future problems if it had a virus in it.

good luck

Also - the system may tell you that "Access is denied" when you try to move/copy certain files/folders.

To fix that: How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP.
