Hard Drive and DVD connection

Can a IDE hard drive and DVD player be connected together to function using 1 IDE slot on the motherboard? If so, can the hard drive be the "slave" since the ribbon only connects a certain way and is only so long? Please help!

Re: Hard Drive and DVD connection

yes they can
if you have a spare 5in bay you can get rails to put in to put a hard drive above your dvd allowing you to run the h/drive as master
or you can get a cable made up with a big enough space between the master and slave plug to do a loop de loop with the cable

Re: Hard Drive and DVD connection

Thanks, dai. Where could I possibly get a "special" cable made?

Re: Hard Drive and DVD connection

Also, one more question. Does it matter which end of the IDE cable goes into the motherboard as long as the "red edge" goes with pin 1?
