[SOLVED] Disc Read Error on boot
Hi...
I'm working on getting some brownie points by fixing a friends laptop for her. Problem is her hard drive got some damage, and it is out of the picture now. I had a spare *my old laptop one* hard drive laying around, so I did the switch and was greeted by the disk read error. I got around it, made my way into the recovery console and got windows to boot on it again. It was the old install from my system, so I did a quick check to make sure I wasn't missing any important files. Next time I booted it, again the disk read error. Back into recovery, quick format, reinstall. Windows ran. I shut the laptop off, brought it back home and when I turned it on here... same thing. So a full format, new installation, commencement of updates, installation of anti viral program then I shut it down to let some updates take effect. I had shut it down already once *a restart* so installed drivers would work, and it booted up fine. This time, disk read error again. The drive is recognized in the bios, I could keep going into the recovery console to boot windows, but I would like to fix this problem. Is it likely something permanent aka not fixable? Or is there a step I might be missing. chkdsk /r is running right now and it seems to be hung up on 50% for some time now. Once it is done (or I stop it) I will run fixmbr and fixboot. If that doesn't work, and the issue resurfaces, is there some other course of action I can take? Thanks, I would like to avoid needing to buy a new hard drive for it (because if I do the temptation to put a bigger one in my laptop might arise and that is even more grief) Thanks again. |

Re: Disc Read Error on boot
Chkdsk took a while with /r *it hung on 50, reached 68 and went back to 50* but I let it go overnight. Woke up, rebooted, still read disk.
So I used fixmbr then fixboot. Reboot, still read disk. I tried using bootcfg /rebuild and was given an error that it failed to scan for windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system. ... use chkdsk to detect any disk errors. So I am running chkdsk /p right now, once it is done I will try bootcfg again. I have a feeling I am out of luck |

Re: Disc Read Error on boot
I got it to boot again, but I get error messages when programs try and run.
Looking at a "An exception occured while trying to run "Shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL wscui.cpl"" Must be something physically wrong with the drive if it keeps being corrupt |

Re: Disc Read Error on boot
Exactly what error message are you getting when booting ?? ORIGINALLY
It sounds like your/the drive is faulty. You could try a low level format (nukenboot or killdisk) by far best bet is to go to manufacturers website and download a disk diagnostic utility .. Seagate V1.09 is good .. and works with most manufacturers drives that go across my workbench

Re: Disc Read Error on boot
Originally it was "disc read error / press ctrl+alt+del to reboot" right after the initial boot screen with the Dell logo and "Press F2 for setup/F12 for bootmenu"
I can't quote the current error exactly since I am at work, but it now tries running windows, takes a fair amount of time then gets to a BSOD about a corrupt something or other. I will download the diagnostic tools and run them when I get home. Thanks. |

Re: Disc Read Error on boot
gut feeling tells me your drive is on its way out .. the diagnostics should pinpoint whether it's good or not.
My experience with laptop drives is that they seem to stop working with no warning .. although sometimes this is associated with Click of death ..

Re: Disc Read Error on boot
that is more or less what I was expecting .. I have seen it very often .. don't bother trying to get it working because if it does work for a short while ( which I doubt considering your recent experiences) it will just make lives a misery .. both yours and your friends .. make a back up as quick as possible to avoid losing any important work .. and replace it asap
good luck
