The drive will be scanned and you will be asked to:
Add installation to boot list? Press Y.
Next prompt: Enter Load Identifier: > type Windows XP > press <Enter>.
Another prompt: Enter OS Load options: > type /fastdetect > press <Enter>.
Take the Windows disc out.
Type Exit > press <Enter>.
I starts to scan for about 2 minutes then says I need to run CHKDSK becasue the drive is corroupt.

So when I run chkdsk /r I get an error saying "Autochk.exe" is missing.

and now I'm stuck.

Can some one help me ?

I don't have the origonal windows cd that came with my computer so I'm using my friends.

Hi

The XP version on the CD has to be the same as the one you have installed.

Start the computer with the Windows CD.
At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to select the repair option.
You will have to enter the Administrator password - if none, just press <Enter>.
In the recovery console - type sfc /scannow, press <Enter>.
When the System File Checker (SFC) has finished:
Type chkdsk /r, then press <Enter>.
Wait for chkdsk to finish.
Type Exit > press <Enter>.
Take the Windows disc out and reboot.

Sfc can't be run in the recovery console. Forgot that.
Is the CD version of Windows the same as the one installed?

What happens when you try to start Windows?
Error messages?
Can you start in Safe mode?
Make/model of the computer?

Can't do safe mode,

When the computer starts I get "Invalid boot.ini" and then it quickly flashes to the HAL.DLL file error.

I have a Windows XP home OEM cd its just for a different manufacture.

The pc is made by gateway and the CD is from dell.

Re: Hal.dll Is missing, Bootcfg Wont work ! Please help

Try starting "Last known good configuration".

What happened when this problem started?
Crashes? Power failure? Other?

See if you can find a recovery solution for your computer at Gateway:

Re: Hal.dll Is missing, Bootcfg Wont work ! Please help

OEM disks from different manufacturers usually do not work on any computer but the ones they are written for, the software is modified by the manufacturer to only work with specific processors and chipsets for a certain computer thus the term OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer.

The easiest and least expensive way around this would be to call the manufacturer of the computer and give them the model number of the computer and if they have the disks in stock they usually will sell them to you at a greatly reduced rate and you will have them in a few days.

One other thing they come with a little ting called Legal......

I don't get as far as to getting that option, the computer crashes before that screen appears,

I'm not sure as to what has caused this issue.

What model is the Gateway?
Can you enter BIOS? If so, check the temperatures and voltages.
