[SOLVED] Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
I'm installing a new hard drive for someone. They bought a SATA HDD but only have IDE sockets on the MB so I bought a converter for them. The IDE drive needs to stay master as it has all the critical information on it and I don't really want to have to reinstall everything on the new drive. The problem is I can't get both HDD's to read at the same time. Either the computer reads one or the other, or depending on where i place the pin connector neither. I worked for three hours and I can't figure this out. I know the new HDD and converter are working because it was detected. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
HDD - Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM
Converter - Rosewill RC-203 SATA to IDE Mini Vertical Bridge All I know about the MB is that it's from Dell like the rest of the computer. I can't get a hold of them right now to find out exactly what model it is. To be honest I don't even know what model the Dell is itself. |

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
The adapter only supports SATA 1 (the drive is SATA 2).
Put the drive's jumper in the "Opt1" psition. ![]() Make the "old" HDD master - hooked up at the end of the ribbon cable. Set the jumper on the adapter to "Slave" and hook the new HDD up at the middle of the cable. jump.gif If the computer has no SATA ports I wonder if it will be able to see more than 137GB of the drive. |

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
Alright I was able to get over there tonight and it didn't work. I noticed something weird though. It didn't show up in the bios or my computer but it was detected in the device manager.
Also I found out the computer model, it's a Dimension 3000 and they're running XP home with SP2 if that makes any difference. |

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
Can you see both HDDs in Disk management?
(Right click "My computer" > choose "Manage" > Disk Management) If so - right click the drive >> choose "New partition" and follow the wizard to format the drive. You may have to initialize the drive first. If not: Try using IDE channel 2 - "borrow" the ribbon cable from the CD drive. And/or - use another 80-wire ribbon cable. |

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
My apologies for not replying, I haven't had the time to get on. Additionally I won't be able to try your suggestion until Wednesday. Hopefully it will work, I never even thought about disk management. I should be back on later this week with an update.

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
I just hooked up a brand new SATA2 drive on a SATA to IDE converter.
The drive was NOT seen by Windows. I installed it on another computer with an on-board SATA port and partitioned it with FDISK and formatted it in DOS and then it was seen thru the converter. That new drive just may need to be partitioned and formatted before using. Just a thought. The Shadow

Re: Installing SATA HDD As Slave On IDE MB
I got it working! Turns out I had to initialize it in Disk Manager. Once I did that I just formatted it and it works perfectly, I can see it in the Bios now too. Thanks for all the help!
