Trouble with my External hard drive and computer

I am not all that knowledgable about computers but have recently purchased a seagate external hard drive 250G. It has been great until the other day. i giot a message to say that the F:\ was not communicating with my computer. i have managed to have it communicate, however it has been intermitant. I have had the problem of O/I Connection but that has gone. The external hard drive is registering with my computer and all the data is on the external harddrive, however, if i click on any file it does not open up. If i click on a music file it opens to the music player but does not register the file i am wanting to listen to. what can i do and are there some settings on my computer to check , or is there a problem on the external hard drive? i hope you can help me.

Re: Trouble with my External hard drive and computer

Hi

Replace the USB/Firewire cable.
Try different ports on the computer.
Do not connect the drive via a hub.

Re: Trouble with my External hard drive and computer

i actually did replace the usb cable. i could replace it with another, however if this doesn't work , is there any other reason that the files in the external hard drive don't send the information even if i click on them in the external hard drive and that opens the music player on the computer?

Re: Trouble with my External hard drive and computer

There's no sense in changing again if you're sure the cable is OK.
Look in Device manager - any yellow or red "marks"?
Try the drive/enclosure with another computer.

Try Windows USB troubleshooter - click this link in Internet Explorer: hcp://help/tshoot/tsusb.htm
