No HD Found!
Hi
My pc recently died so i aquired another one, i had lots of important files on my old pc's hard drive so i've removed it and tried to add it to my new pc. I have connected it as 'primary slave device', set the jumper correctly and powered up. A message in the bottom info bar read 'found new hardware' and then 'disk drive' however, when i checked my computer the drive was'nt there, only the main hd (C:) and cd/dvd (D:). Both the installed primary drive (C:) and my other 'slaved drive' are ide devices. The drive is visable in device manager but i'm unable to locate or access it. Any advice here would be much appreciated.. Thanks |

Re: No HD Found!
Just to make sure everything is hooked up correctly, what is the brand name of the drive you are trying to access. How do you have the jumpers connected and where is it located on the ribbon cable? What else is on that cable?
Oh, you are using an 80 connector cable and not the older look alike 40 connector cable, aren't you?

Re: No HD Found!
I'll start over, i got a few important things wrong in my first post,,,lol. Ok, i have tried to slave the hd from my cd/dvd drive as this is ide(installed main hd is sata) the jumper on the cd/dvd drive is furthest to the left and no jumper on the added 'slave hd' the drive i'm sure is seagate and is connected to the middle connector on the ribbon which i'm sure is 40 and not 80(thats how many pins there are)
Thanks again.. Last edited by pzblues; 04-10-2008 at 05:48 AM. |

Re: No HD Found!
If the cable has a blue connector to the motherboard, a black connector on the other end (master) and a gray connector (slave) on it, then it is an 80 connector cable. If you don't have an 80 connector cable, it most likely won't work, because that is what you need for a hard drive. The cdrom will work fine with a 40 connector cable.
Just make sure from the diagram on the drives that you set both of them. Set the Hard Drive as master and the cdrom as slave and place them as described (master on end, slave on middle connector). Extra note: Make sure that your Sata (boot drive) is still listed first in your bios in the Boot area and the Hard Drive Priority area, because some times when we put an IDE hard drive in with a Sata, it will default to the IDE. Just make sure the SAta is listed first if that is your boot drive. Post back with questions/concerns.

Re: No HD Found!
Ok, i've used the suggested cable and i actually bypassed the cd/dvd drive and set the hd as master but i still cannot see it in my computer, it does however appear in device manager, under disk drives there is: ST3160021A ST380013AS |

Re: No HD Found!
Reset both drives with the cdrom being the master on the end of the cable and the hard drive jumpers set as slave on the middle connector.
We just need to try different combinations to see if you get anything. Oh, make sure the bios is set to auto where the hard drive is.

Re: No HD Found!
Ok, in dell setup(i assume this is bios settings) drives, there are:
sata 0 onboard sata hd sata 1 off PATA 0 onboard( either cd/dvd drive or installed ide hd) whichever is connected PATA 1 off now, when i turn PATA 1 on and connect the hd as a slave device i get an error saying that niether PATA 0 or 1 have anything connected, when its turned off, PATA 0 recognises both cd/dvd and ide hd(whichever is connected as master....) although ide hd still does not show in my computer. There is a thin blue cable from the mother board to the cd/dvd, not sure if this is significant or not? BTW, there is a diskchecker utility which i ran and both sata and ide disks passed, really confusing!! Last edited by pzblues; 04-10-2008 at 07:38 AM. |

Re: No HD Found!
i had that problem with my seagate drive that i took out of my xbox. first of all, put everything back the way it was when you first posted, i don't know what everyone else is talking about. what you need to do is go to the manufacture's website and look for an firmware update. if that don't work, go to it in device manager, go to properties, and go to the volume tab, and click populate. if it says can't access drive or unable to read from device, it most likely locked so then what you'll have to do is find a hd unlocking program or flash it with its firmware which will then due to a glitch or something will unlock it. wether it will keep your data, i don't know cause i formatted it a soon as i finally got it to recognise and i can't remember if it did or not. the flashing worked for me.
