SATA Drive Won't Boot XP or Linux
I have a dual-boot setup of XP and Linux Ubuntu on my computer and neither will boot. I suspect the hard drive because I can run Ubuntu Live from the disk. My SATA drive is a Seagate Barracude and I have an ASUS a7n8x deluxe. I don't know what the best thing to do in order to still get my data back. I rarely use the Linux boot, just wanted to try Linux, so all my data is in Windows. Should I try reinstalling Linux and see if I can get to my Windows data from there? I really just need to make sure I can get everything off of the drive and I don't know the best way to do this.
Thanks |

Re: SATA Drive Won't Boot XP or Linux
Welcome to TSF.
![]() What happens when you try to boot XP? You could try repairing the XP boot manager: Start the computer with the Windows CD. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to select the repair option. You will have to enter the Administrator password - if none, just press <Enter>. The Windows installation will be detected - usually called "1" >> select that. In the recovery console - type bootcfg /rebuild > press <Enter>. The drive will be scanned and you will be asked to: Add installation to boot list? Press Y. Next prompt: Enter Load Identifier: > type Windows XP > press <Enter>. Another prompt: Enter OS Load options: > type /fastdetect > press <Enter>. Take the Windows disc out. Type Exit > press <Enter>. |
