250GB Harddrive is recognized as 127 GB 037GB

I have installed a 250 GB Seagate Pata Hard drive (recognized as only 127GB) on a 5 yr old Dell Dimension 4400. I was able to copy all 37 GB of data, including Windows 2000 Pro with service pack 4, to the new hard drive with Seagate's Disc wizard, but it would not allow me to partition the 250GB drive before imaging the old drive onto the new, and it now recognizes only the 127 GB. However, I can use both drives. I can access all of the data and believe that all of the first drive's data was copied. I then enabled large LBA but still do not see 250 GB. Can any one make a suggestion?

Thanks,
Tom (sukki234)

Also - if you can't see more than 127GB in Disk management >> check the BIOS version.

Only BIOS versions 4400_A03 and above support LBA (drives larger than 127GB).

Re: 250GB Harddrive is recognized as 127 GB 037GB

eneles,
Dell did not have a bios change that would do the job. I have discovered that I must purchase and install a new controller card to get my Dell 4400 to recognize this 250GB hard drive. Would you care to recommend one? I thought I would get it at Newegg. I have found them to be dependable and usually the best priced for what I have done so far.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

Re: 250GB Harddrive is recognized as 127 GB 037GB

I think you have been misinformed by a Dell tech.

The information is available on Dell's website:

Quote:
The following changes were made to the A02 BIOS to create A03:

1. Removed irrelevant setup help text
2. Added code that allows a system with USB keyboard and PS2 mouse to wake
from standby with one keypress. Previous BIOS revisions required two
keypresses.
3. Added 48 bit LBA code for support for hard drives larger than 127GB.

But, use the newer A06 version: http://support.dell.com/support/down...id=-1&impid=-1
