Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
Hey guys - i have a Toshiba Screen Play Pro 750 Gb external/stand alone HDD- on a Windows XP system. The problem I'm having with it is:
- I was using it, moving stuff from one HDD to another but when i tried to go into a specific directory it just gave me the error message "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" - after retrying a couple of times, i tried resetting the system and after it came on (windows did a pre start up screen check of the disk it found some errors and corrected them) but now when i go in My Computer and i try to access it it gives me the same message "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" - when i turn it on or off Windows detects it and it appears in My Computer, I have the Safely Remove Hardware thing and everything - I tried using a bunch of Data recovery programs but nothing worked at first, then i came upon this forum - i tried Test Disk - following the steps described by eneles but still no result - after that i tried Photorec and it does seem to be able to recover my files..but as the HDD was almost full - i first have to buy a new one so i can recover the data on it. - also last night i tried using Data Doctor Recovery NTFS using Advanced settings (because the normal scan didn't find anything) and after a long night of scanning it found most of my stuff (in kind of a random order and with some file names changed) - the question i wanted to ask is how will i be able to differentiate renamed archives that have all been placed together - or will they still work? - and as I don't yet have the money to buy a new one I am also very opened to new suggestions to try Thanks alot * oh i forgot to mention that if I plug it into my TV as a stand alone - all the software works ok - but it just says no files found Last edited by maphioso; 03-21-2008 at 05:46 AM. |

Re: Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
Thank you for the welcome and the advice - I will probably use Data Doctor Recovery NTFS because it keeps most of the file names intact - i tried it today on some archives and it worked ok..now i just need to get a bigger HDD..the scanning process took alot of time but at least it makes a log so if don't have enough space u can do the recovery by selecting what u need each time without having to redo the scan everytime.
Oh one more thing i wanted to ask - after i'm done recovering the stuff should i just try formatting the HDD the regular way..by now i guess the problem is not physical, would a simple formatting make it reusable ? |

Re: Iomega ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
And It's an Iomega HDD not TOSHIBA ! very sorry !..my old one used to be Toshiba..
also(and i will look this up on the official page too) does anyone knows if it needs some sort of special formatting being a stand alone device with it's own firmware? Last edited by maphioso; 03-21-2008 at 02:57 PM. |

Re: Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
The firmware shouldn't make a difference - but don't touch the MBR.
It's best to format the drive in disk management. Please post a screenshot of Disk management so we can see if the drive is arranged in a "funny" way. |

I hope i didn't do anything to the MBR by using the write option in Test Disk initially.. http://www.imigi.ro/public/pview/2700/disk.JPG |

Re: Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
There's only one partition on the drive.
I don't know that kind of drive. Is the drive software installed in folders in that single partition? If so, formatting the drive is not a good idea. |

Re: Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
yes it's a single NTFS partition, that's the way i bought it - i did have a folder called Firmware, but the thing is..the software works ok when I connect it to the TV, it just doesn't see any of the files or folders on it..here are the Data Doctor Recovery NTFS scans too:

Did have a folder called Firmware??? Is it gone now???
Can you see the "Firmware" folder in Windows (make sure Windows shows hidden folders/files)? |

Re: Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
It should be safe to format the drive.
If anything should go wrong the firmware/software can be downloaded here: https://iomega-eu-en.custhelp.com/cg...p_sid=YS6kci_i |

Re: Toshiba ScreenPlayPro 750 - The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
unfortunately i think u can only find the titles and not the firmware...it's been years since they last made any uprades but i found this in your link : "Note: Any time you reformat a ScreenPlay Pro drive, you must recreate a folder called Firmware on the hard drive. This will allow the firmware that is built into the drive to funtion properly when used in TV mode." - so i guess it should be ok...
thank you very much for the help i will post as soon as i recover the data and try formatting |
