Re: PC wont boot suspect hdd prob

Well, double and triple checked everything, tried every different config i can think of, got it all laid out on a sheet of cardboard, M/board, psu, monitor, start button, thats it, nothing else and nothing happening, also tried with/without mem stick. All i have is the green led on m/board and cpu/psu fans spinning.

Found others with identical problems but no solution except replace m/board.
http://forums.ebuyer.com/archive/index.php/t-2862.html

Was hopeful of this one but no deal,
http://www.techsupportforum.com/hard...st-out-box.htm

Looks like we are probably done here but before i go, is it some kind of netiquette thing or is there another reason why your hardware tech colleagues have totally ignored this thread. I know everyone is a volunteer and you all do a good job but while everyone is off helping people with comparitively minor problems, this pc is not doing anything at all.

Many thanks Nicholas, for at least trying to help me, i suppose all that remains is to figure out how to find a compatible m/board but don't even know where to start.

I don't think any of my colleagues have ignored this thread.
If they had a solution I'm sure they would have posted.

Re: PC wont boot suspect hdd prob

Yes, you will need a CPU in the new board.

Re: PC wont boot suspect hdd prob

Hi again Nick, When i was messing with this machine i decided to have a go at cleaning the dirt from the cpu cooling fan.......not having read up on it.

I took the 4 screws out and thats when i realised that these screws were holding more than just the fan cos all those fins fell over, anyway thought i may as well clean it now i came this far but not to go any further without reading up on some stuff, it was difficult to realign the fins to the underside of the fan but i managed it, trouble is i think i may have over tightened one of the screws cos i heard a crack. As i'm 99.9% sure the m/board was shot anyway so i'm not concerned whether i cracked the board but is it possible that this cpu has been damaged?

As for my last question, were you saying that i would need a new cpu or would i usually be able to transfer the old one to the new m/board?

Re: PC wont boot suspect hdd prob

[no response from dvd drive when button pressed]
this is either a bad power supply or a bad drive
when the power is plugged in the draw should open when the button is pressed
eneles knows what he is doing and i tend to mainly bypass threads he is already on
there is an intel video guide on cpu install here

Thanks Dai, i did think this pertinent but then decided maybe not as Nicholas didn't mention it.

As for him knowing what he is doing, there was never any doubt, and i did apologise for the outburst to which i think you now refer, but if i do not have an answer to the question of whether the cpu is damaged then there is hardly any point in continuing with this fix.

Thanks again for taking the time.

Re: PC wont boot suspect hdd prob

Thanks very much Dai, i just wasn't sure if it was acceptable to reuse a cpu or whether they are so cheap that you would install a new one as a matter of course. Saw a thread recently where a schoolteacher had a problem with a lot of similarities, he said it was emachines but no further info on the rig as he couldn't get it to boot.....can't remember where the thread was now, anyway that thread was what rekindled my interest, the offending machine has been lying around in bits these last couple months as it belongs to my sis in law and she can't afford a new m/board just yet.

Going by what you said mebbe its worth another look.

Thanks again, Regards Dave.

Re: PC wont boot suspect hdd prob

no point in buying one for an old board if you don't have to one of your friends may have one lying around i must have half a dozen different ones that i have tossed in the cupboard
