hp pavilion 512 - computer won't load properly.

Hi,

I own a hp pavilion 512n

I am having a problem getting my computer to load.

I hit the power button to my computer.
it then starts to start up I see the windows xp page the it goes to the hp invent page
after that it goes to a black page with white letters that says:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until Windows starts: 5

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried all of these options and my computers goes to the windows xp page then to the hp invent page then back to this black screened page with the same message.

Does anyone know how I can get my computer working again?

Thank for your help

Re: hp pavilion 512 - computer won't load properly.

Did you try the Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

IF NOT, do so.

If you get to the actual Command Prompt, enter CHKDSK /F, it may require a reboot to run (I forget if it does in Safe Mode).

If you cannot get to the Safe Mode, the HP we have at work has a Recovery option displayed during boot (in addition to the BIOS Setup). Try this and see if the HP Recovery has an option to run CHKDSK or attempt a repair. Be sure you carefully read the HP text to ensure you understand what will be done.

FYI: HP has a special hard drive partition with recovery files/utilities. This is why they usually do not supply a CD. At least, this is the case with the HP at work.
