[SOLVED] Wacky startup issue!

First of all, system specs
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4
CPU: intel q6600 @ STOCK (2.4 ghz)
Memory: 4x1GB Kingston KVR800D2N5/1G R pc6400
PSU: Antec true power trio 650 watt (8 pin cpu power connector)
GPU: Saphire (ati) 2900 pro 512 mb
Sound: Sound Blaster X-Fi extreme audio
HDD: WDC sata 160 GB/ maxtor sata 250 GB (backups) no-raid
CPU Cooling: Zalman CNPS9500 LED (29* C @ idle, 35* C under load)
Case Fans: 2x80 mm front intake, 120 mm side panel intake, 1x80 mm rear exhaust
CD: Sony 52x r+rw
DVD: Memorex DVD rom
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

When I power up my PC after it has been off for several hours, it makes what sounds like a grinding noise, then it either A. hangs up at splash screen, B. BSoD's, C. Go's into windows, then immediately reboots.

However, once it reboots, whether it is manual or auto, it loads windows fine and runs all apps, even 2142 at full settings with no problems. If I leave the computer on a while and reboot, again, no problem. It is only when I do a cold boot. Yesterday, when I turned on computer for the first time, I hit delete key to enter bios, let it sit in bios for about a minute (till grinding/whining stopped) esc. to windows and it booted fine, and ran all day with no reboots or errors.

My guess is that the HDD is going. Sticking when cold then once it warms, runs fine. Could it be anything else?....Thanks in advance!

Re: Wacky startup issue!

down load and run the hard drive makers diognostic on the hard drive
put a straw on the hard drive and to your ear and listen as it boots up and see if it is a bearing noise

Re: Wacky startup issue!

Thanks for the response.

It doesn't do it once it warms up, and boots. This is a new build so I don't mind changing drives. I don't think the diagnostics will work since it only makes the noise/has errors when cold.

Re: [SOLVED] Wacky startup issue!

the fans pull very little if they made a difference it would point to you being underpowered
you need a lot more leeway than that
