Information recovery on my seagate 3.5 external hardrive

To the good people at tech support.

I have a seagate 120G external hard drive. My wife was cleaning the computer area and removed cables and such. When she went to replug all the pc harware plugged the wrong ac adapter into0 my hard drive and her description was " smoke came the top"
The power light does "NOT" go on. However, when I plug it into my computer it makes a tone. Can I salvage the files on the drive? And if so how?

Hi bebopper, hopefully it only took out the controller in the enclosure. You'll need to remove the drive from the enclosure and install it in your computer using an IDE ribbon. What I have done in the past is unhook the cd drive and use that power connector and IDE ribbon to hook up the drive and remove the data. The drive is probably jumpered as a master, so connect it to the end connector on the ribbon. Mike
