[SOLVED] windows only detects 1/10th of my hdd space

Here's my brother's computer:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...330092&lang=en

I have installed a maxtor 6l300r0 hdd into my brother's old computer:

http://www.superwarehouse.com/Maxtor...300R0/p/623088

I have set it to be a slave on the primary IDE channel and set the jumpers to be slave. Bios and windows xp pro sp2 detect the drive and I've formatted to NTFS. Problem is, I bought a 300 GB drive and only 31.4 GIGS are available in disk manager. Any solutions to this problem? I've never heard of so much of a hdd just going to waste.

Re: windows only detects 1/10th of my hdd space

Hi, welcome to TSF.

Check the jumper again - one position limits the drive to 32GB.

Also - make sure the other drive is set to master (not CS).

Re: windows only detects 1/10th of my hdd space

Hi moneys2,

I recommend what eneles said but If that doesn't work, try to see if there a new bios version for the computer and if there is, flash the bios. good luck!!!

Re: windows only detects 1/10th of my hdd space

Only BIOS versions released before 1999 have a 32GB limit.

Windows 2000/XP/Vista have a 32GB limitation for FAT32 partitions.

Windows 2000/XP/Vista have a 32GB limitation on formating Fat32 partitions, I think you meant.

Re: windows only detects 1/10th of my hdd space

I only mentioned different 32GB limitations (other than the jumper setting) - not necessarily relevant to moneys2's problem.

Re: windows only detects 1/10th of my hdd space

Okay, according to the picture you posted, I should take the jumper off for slave? I'll give it a whirl and see what happens. I'm glad my computer uses sata. I despise jumpers.
