weirdest external HDD problem
i have a new problem and it's with my external hard drive
here's the backstory 2 month old Lacie 1TB external http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10922 opened box and formatted into four partitions listed from beginning of drive to end: partitions 1 and 2; 30 gb each NTFS total of 60gigs partition 3 20 gb HFS parition partition 4 800 gb NTFS i would use this at my home windows pc windows xp64bit and at work, new imac 24" dual boot with OSX 10.4.9 and Windows xp32 on fat32. i was using the drive under windows at work when it froze up and said i may have lost data in partition 4. ever since when i plug in the HDD it bottlenecks the computer, making it unusable. Every windows based computer i've tried plugging the drive into freezes because it keeps trying to find the drive. Sometimes it will see all 4 partitions in the device manager, but at best partition 1 is accessible the rest say "error performing inpage operation". once i disconnect the drive the computer becomes usable. However, the drive both comes up fine under OSX, but is also usable. After lots of tech support with Lacie, and what they thought was a bad power supply (but wasn't) they said i may need to reformat. I stopped here because of critical data, and actually having time to not worry about it's importance. So what caused this? or more importantly can i fix this without reformatting? Also, since OSX can see it, what would be the best way of transferring it to another NTFS HDD? |
