SATA master + ATA slave

Is this possible? My grandmother recently bought a new dell running Vista that uses an SATA drive as a master drive. Her old computer died after motherboard failure. However, the old hard drive, a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 200GB should still be functional. She wants to use the old hard drive as a slave drive in the new system. However, that old drive uses an IDE/ATA connection. The motherboard in the new PC, a Foxconn G33M02, has an ATA connector. Should it work fine to connect the old ATA drive as a slave to the new, master SATA drive? I'm no expert on hard drives, so I just wanted to make sure it would work. I would imagine you would just remove the jumper on the old drive, setting it to slave, and attach it to the slave part of the IDE cable. Would this work? Would you have to install any drivers or anything if you didn't want to boot off the drive?

Re: SATA master + ATA slave

If you want to add the drive to the ATA you will likely find the CD attached to the same connector as the master. What you will need is set the drive to SL and attach to the other connector on the cable.

Re: SATA master + ATA slave

Hmm, now I have another problem. The IDE slot on the motherboard does not seem to match the old IDE drive and cable. The motherboard is a foxconn G33M02. I don't have access to the computer right now, but is it possible that there is a different IDE specification or something? The drive is a standard 40pin connector, and it is too wide to fit into the IDE slot. Am I missing something?

Re: SATA master + ATA slave

Looking at the manual for your board it show the IDE header blue and beside the Main MOB power connector if this system has an optical drive CD/DVD it may be plugged in there the only changes to IDE cable has been the addition of the 80 wire cable still 40 pin. Since this is a newer system it will likely require a newer cable.
Another option is to get an IDE to SATA adaptor.

I use the IDE to SATA dongles all the time and believe it or not (and you probably won't) your old IDE drive will transfer data at many times IDE speeds. It's the best way to go when you have a spare SATA connector on the motherboard and want to use an old IDE drive.
My storage drive in my own system is set up this way. I love it!

The IDE drive with SATA dongle attached will look something like this:

The drive itself is powered in the normal way, but the dongle gets power through a floppy drive power cable. If you don't have such a cable, adapters are available.

Good Luck,
The Shadow

Re: SATA master + ATA slave

I've found that sometimes different drives and cables won't agree, there is a pin towards the middle, sometimes it's there on the drive sometimes it's not, sometimes it's there on the cable sometime's it's solid (easy check- see if it's 40 or 80 wire). So might check that. 7200.8 barracuda is still fairly new so that's probably what it is. Since it's on CD it's a 40 wire, but the HDD wants an 80 wire connector. Thankfully, 80's usually agree with opticals.
