dual boot from two hard drives
I bought a new computer with windows vista. I installed the drive from my old computer with XP into new computer. The new computer has a sata drive. Old drive is ide. I have old drive set to slave and plugged into ide cable slave. When I turn on I get screen with options to start wiindows normally blah, blah. To get it to boot I have to restart and go to boot menu and select sata drive. Is there any way to boot to old drive and run xp? Or is it possible to transfer files from old to new drive?
Thanks |

Re: dual boot from two hard drives
Hi, welcome to TSF.
![]() Can you start XP in Safe mode? (tap F8 when the computer starts) You will, most likely, have to reinstall (or repair) XP on the IDE drive - disconnect the SATA drive with Vista on first. Last edited by Deleted090308; 02-21-2008 at 06:30 AM. |

Re: dual boot from two hard drives
You can perform a repair install with a borrowed XP retail disc.
Just make sure it's the same version - Home/Professional/MCE etc. How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install. |

one thing to consider, if the xp on the drive came installed on the computer it came out of, you cannot move it to another computer. It would be a violation of microsofts eula.

Re: dual boot from two hard drives
I think the best thing to do is just use the old drive for storage. How do I change the boot sequence. Right now 1st is slave and 3rd is master. I tryed the file transfer wizard to move files and settings and it looked like it worked but it didn't. I was able to import my address book at lunch, but haven't found favorites on old drive. I still have issues with printer not working, but thats another problem.

Re: dual boot from two hard drives
You change the boot order in BIOS.
First should be CD/DVD, second the drive with Vista (SATA). I don't know how to transfer favourites from an "inactive" operating system - but I'm sure somebody else does. |
