using ATA and SATA together
Hi all -I'm looking for help with installing and older seagate Barracuda 7200.7 hard drive (on an IDE cable) into a system already using 2 SATA drives, obviously on SATA cables. I've got the jumper on the IDE drive set to slave and I'm connecting the slave connector on the IDE cable at the drive end. The system end of the IDE cable is connected to the Primary IDE slot on the mobo (ASUS A8N32 deluxe). The problem is when I boot the system is trying to boot off the newly introduced IDE drive and I get the obvious error message due to lack of OS. When I enter the BIOS the main page shows the 7200.7 as 'Primary IDE slave' and the other 2 drives are as they have always been which is 'Third IDE master' & 'Sixth IDE master'.
Not sure what I'm missing but would like to add the ATA drive as a 3rd hard drive option. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: using ATA and SATA together
First of all, set the IDE Hard drive to master and place it on the end of that ribbon cable. (anything else on that ribbon cable should be set to slave and on the middle connector)
Then, go in to the Boot area of your bios setup menu and make sure the Hard Drive area under that heading has your Sata (boot drive) set first in that list. When you have both SAta and IDE together in the hard drive area, many boards default to the IDE drive, so you need to tell it where to look by doing this. That should take care of your problem.

Re: using ATA and SATA together
Thanks Tumbleweed36 - that did indeed solve my problem, and i've gotta say I feel a little foolish cause it seems pretty obvious now, and I'm surprised I couldn't work that one out myself. Nevermind.
Thanks again C |

Re: using ATA and SATA together
We are happy you got it solved. Most don't know that it defaults to the IDE in a situation like that. Oh, don't ever feel foolish to ask a question on here, we all do that from time to time, so you are in good company on that one. Hey, don't be a stranger, stick around and enjoy the forum. Have a great day.
