Maxtor Basic "code 10"

I have an Maxtor Basic and it was working fine, then I moved and when I hooked it up I get a "code 10" error and I have tried it on other computers and get the same thing. It is out of warranty and there is a lot of valuable information on it. Any ideas on how to fix this???

Hi danh63, please keep your issue to one thread. Is this the same issue that you posted about in this thread?

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

Have you tried taking the device out of its enclosure and placing it inside a tower? As the others users in the other thread mentioned, this is probably related to the USB controller hardware and not the hard drive itself (so your data is probably intact).

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

I was going to try that, but wasn't exactly sure how to go about it. Could I just unplug the floppy drive and plug it in there? There is switches that I could pull, do I put them in the slave drive slot or just leave them how they are. I would be one happy guy if I coud get all the info off that drive!

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

No, the floppy connection won't work.

Take the cables from the CD drive and move them (temporarily) to the hard drive.

Not to sound like an idiot, but I just unplug one of the CD drives and plug it into the Maxtor hard drive and reboot and it should show up??

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

If you have more than one (CD) drive connected to the cable - unplugged them both - then move the ribbon cable to the hard drive.
That way you don't have to think about jumper settings.
Then it should show up (if it's OK, of course).

One of them is a DVD player and the other is a CD drive. SO I won't have to worry about the jumper settings? Just unplug the ribbon and connect to the drive?

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

Well, something else to check is whether or not your optical drives are Serial ATA or IDE. Each has its own connector and power plug. If your opticals are SATA and your hard drive is IDE, you won't be able to use their conenctors to put the hard drive in, and vice versa.

But if they're both IDE, which is somewhat likely, the power connector you'll use is the same 4-pin molex connector that would have been powering the optical drives before.

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

OK. I have the drive connected in my computer, I feel the drive spinning and there are no error messages with code 10, but I still don't see it anywhere. when I reboot the computer there is a message about drive 1 and drive 0 and it asked me if I wanted to goto the set up utility. Is there anything that I was supposed to do there?

Re: Maxtor Basic "code 10"

No, don't do anything in the "setup utility" if you want to keep the files on the drive.

Can you see the drive in Disk management?
(Start > Settings > Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk management)

See if you can mount the drive with FindAndMount.
