Confusing Behavior
OK,
Here is the situation ... my wife went to work and booted her computer only to be greeted with the ubiqitous "Windows did not shut down properly screen" ... the system then gave several choices to include boot in safe mode, boot last known good configuration, and boot normally. When safe mode is chosen, the system responds with hard drive file locations then locks up. When the other two choices are used, the system displays the Windows XP boot logo and then restarts roughly a minute later and returns to the "windows didn't shut down properly" screen. She turned the system over to the supposed computer guru for her office and he was completely and utterly stumped. She asked if I would look at it and I agreed. I have tried changing the SATA drive cable, disconnecting the SATA drive completely, adding a standard IDE drive to use as the boot drive (I know this drive should work) and nothing seems to help. In fact, after disconnecting the SATA drive the system, the "Windows didn't shut down properly screen" was still displayed. I simply want to recover the important data from the SATA drive ... how do I do that? |

Confusing Behavior
Tried that with same result ... spoke with the tech guy for her office and have determined that they need to send it to a data recovery service ... still don't understand whta happened to it but it is not my system so as long as I am not paying the bill on it, I suppose it is not my problem

It would be a lot cheaper than data recovery company and quicker as well i'd imagine, it shouldn't be that hard to find a computer with a spare sata socket

RE: Confusing Behavior
That would have been a reasonable solution but I don't have another system that supports SATA drives and my wife's boss is paying for the data recovery (it technically is his computer system) so that is what is going to happen ... If it were mine, I would do everything in my power to avoid sending it off if at all possible ... of course if it were my personal system, I never would have allowed it to get into that condition to begin with if at all possible ... wish I knew how this happened to begin with

hell you could just reinstall windows over old system without a reformat all you have to do is change the folders windows in installed into r just install over the old folder you won't lose any data you'll just lose some registry keys for installed programs.
