[SOLVED] Installing 200GB HD w/data in HP6000 series
I have been trying to add a HD from my old PC (no OS on it) to my new HP6000 series.
I keep getting an Error Loading OS when I boot up. The original HD and DVD are connected with a cable. There is a place on the motherboard to daisy chain and I was able to add another DVD drive that is working fine. I just can't get the HD to work. I changes the jumper settings on the HD but it makes no difference. I went into BIOS and it shows the HD as the 6th one. but I still get the Error on boot up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, RHonda Last edited by lolaisbk; 01-27-2008 at 01:34 PM. Reason: OS : Vista |

Re: Installing 200GB HD w/data in HP6000 series
RHonda, It is bad practice to have a Hard drive and a Cd or DVD on the same ribbon. Try putting the two H/Drives on the same ribbon and the two Cd or Dvd on the other. The Cd/Dvd drives will slow the H/Ds down.
I would suggest disconnecting all the drives other than the drive with ME on it and then attach the second H/D , this will make it easier to trouble shoot. Just a by the way, I haven't seen ME for a very long time , but from memory I seem to remember ME didn't like two H/Ds. |

When you add another hard drive it may change the boot order in the BIOS. I would check to see if the orginal drive is still the first of the HD's in the boot order.

Re: Installing 200GB HD w/data in HP6000 series
Thanks for responding!!!
Belfasteddie, I didn't have the HDs and the DVDs on the same ribbon. Actually this PC does not have a ribbon. The original HD and the original DVD has their own cable (not ribbon) so nothing can be chained to them. I don't have ME , I have Vista. Lead3, I did ck the BIOS when I added the HD and it shows the added one as 6th and the original as 1st. |

Re: Installing 200GB HD w/data in HP6000 series
I don't think it is 6th in the boot order. Usually, either the Floppy (if you have one),
the CD-ROM, then one of you hard drives. This is the boot order. Then for multiple hard drives, there is usually a boot priority setting. Edit: What specific model HP do you have? I will try to look at its manual.

Re: Installing 200GB HD w/data in HP6000 series
Lead3,
Thanks for the response. The HP I have is a 6257. I have the HD sitting in the case (stored) but it is not connected b/c of the error. This is the first PC I have seen that didnt have a ribbon. The HD and the DVD are connected with a cable. ALso, there is not a floppy drive but there is a Pocket Media Drive Bay. Thanks, Rhonda |

Re: Installing 200GB HD w/data in HP6000 series
With the problem hard drive connected, go into BIOS and go to the Boot Tab. On Boot screen there should be Boot Device Priority and Hard Disk drives. If you look in Boot Device Priority, you will see the boot order. It will list all the boot devices. Does the problem device show in this list? If so you will need to change this to the original drive.
Edit: In your version of the BIOS, when you go to the Boot device Priority select the Hard Drive line and press enter. This will give the list of hard drives. Put you original drive at the top of the list.
