Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Hello everyone.
Been a member about 5 minutes now. I searched my problem in search engines and ended up here, but without exactly what I was looking for. This seems like a very good community, so I'll give it a try here. I'm using windows xp with service pack 2, I belive. Earlier today, I was doing my typical "Make the computer sweat" routine (Playing an Online Multiplayer RPG game, listening to music, browsing some web pages, talking to friends on AIM), when I got a call from one of my friends to come to town to hang out. So, I agree and get ready to head out. Having all these applications open causes for a rough time turning them all off and exiting your windows account. (We have three access names. My mother, my father, and myself) And, of course, I'm in a hurry to leave and dont feel like waiting, so, I simply manually restart the PC via the little button under the power button, throw my coat on and walk out. I come back to my PC and experiene horrible waiting periods with anything that uses the internet. Web pages load painfully slow, my online games are virtually unplayable, etc. Everything else is very responsive, offline apps load nicely, folders open without hesitation, so I figure, give her a restart, some app is probably pulling my internet a bit. So, i retart the correct way, not being in a hurry. (By the way, I dont make a habit of being in a hurry and punching the reset. This is the first time.) And during startup, something sticks out in the normal blabber chatter that I ignore, waiting for it to start. It says "Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed" I'm thinking "Eh, i've seen error messages before that just blow over later." So, im all booted up, I enter my access name. The autostart apps begin to load...then click, the PC restarts again. Uh oh. At this point I'm just wanting this to work so bad, I'm giving it another chance, so I wait again. Another "Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed" followed by a smooth startup. I check out my default homepage. Painfully slow load time. So now I know something's wrong, and I'd like to know what steps I should take to troubleshoot/correct this mistake. For the record, I never enter the casing of my tower. From my searching, the error sounds like a hardware issue, to my horror. But, whatever it takes. Thank you so much! -Derrick- |

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
First thing to do is try another 80 connector cable, because they do go "south" from time to time. Second thing, you might to want to try clearing the CMOS and see if that will reset the thing to what it was before.

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Quick tutorial:
1) Unplug the computer from the wall socket and ground yourself always when in that case. 2) There is a jumper that you need to change from pins 1 & 2, to pins 2 & 3. Let it set a few minutes and then return it like it was. (check manual for location) .................................. {OR} 3) Another method, remove the motherboard battery for a few minutes and return it exactly like it was. 4) Plug her back in and see if it comes up O.K. Note: This will do it for most of the motherboards and you can use either method.

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Hi Submurge,
The IDE cable Tumbleweed is refering to is the ones that go to your HD and CD-Roms. To replace the cable (I think the one you need is for the HD) Disconnect the power supply. Open the case to your PC. Touch any metal part of the case to discharge Static Electricity on you. If you look inside the case you may see 2 thick ribbon cables (one goes to the mobo/HD and the other goes to MoBo/CD-rom). Disconnect the cable from the HD and Mobo. The cable can only go one way into the slots so do not force them (they have a notch). The Blue end goes to the MoBo and the Black end goes to the HD. If you have 2 HD then the master is the black end of the cable and the slave is the gray end. Hope this helps. Thanks, Bill Sorry- Tumbleweed, I did not see you online Last edited by BCCOMP; 01-27-2008 at 01:20 PM. |

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Bill,
Never any problem when you jump in, would expect that from any team member. We need to get this guy going, so we will take all the help we can get...and besides, the memory misses things from time to time (maybe more often than that even). I was also busy someplace else on the forum. Just wanted to say, don't ever hesitate to jump in on one I have posted it....always welcome any team member to do that.

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Hey guys, thanks tons for the support. I tried reconnecting the cables (Was a tad confused as to which ones, seeing as the manufacturers had a different set of favorite colors in mind, but overall, I have a good feeling I did it). On the upside, i'm seeing a definite increase on my internet applications. On the lower side, Im still getting my error messages, and the internet apps still aren't what they used to be.
I'm sorry. It may be frustrating that I'm back after not surely thoroughly followed your instructions. I figured I'd give what more information I could. The PC reset itself, followign me powering it back up after do the cables and I got the error message "The system has recovered from a serious error" I checked the log of it. It's all greak to me: " BCCode : 10000050 BCP1 : E1127000 BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 805034A1 BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1 " I chose the link to view technical information about the error (Fully knowing it would be greek to me also) It said that these files would be included in the error report: " C:\DOCUME~1\Derrick\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb43f.dir00\Mini012808-01.dmp C:\DOCUME~1\Derrick\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb43f.dir00\sysdata.xml" Hope that paints a slightly better picture. Though, thanks so far for the actually bearable performance I'm seeing, and the effort. You guys are great. :) |

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Hi,
Is this the only error message you are getting? Did you reboot the system to see if the error returns? Did you replace the cables or just reseated them? Thanks, Bill |

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Just for more info, are you by any chance using any Norton products for security?
I would suggest that at this point, you should run a memory testing software through a number of cycles. (also, just for trial, try one stick of memory at a time and see if the errors are the same)

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Sorry for my late responses. I'm working 3rd shift, 12 hourr days during the front half of the week :(
BCCOMP: This is a reacurring error, yes, and It is the only error I have been able to take note of. I simply reset the cables, I wanted to make sure I needed them replaced before actually replacing them. Tunmbleweed36: I'm running NOD systems for security at this time. I'm thinking if my possible cause spectrum is as wide as I'm thinking it is, I may just take it into the local shop. (I'm no stranger there. ;D). I'm not trying to save a buck. I'm just getting some feedback in between work, since visiting town isnt an option during my work weeks. If you guys feel that may bethe way to go, I'd be glad to share the outcome and the full situation afterwards, perhaps to add to the knowledge bank and provide for anyone else's future encounters. |

Quote:
Before taking it to a shop did you try what Tumbleweed36 suggested above. Try removing one stick of RAM at a time and reboot. See if the error (if any) is the same. I would also run MEMTEST86 below my signature to test your memory. I will let Tumbleweed36 address the Norton issue as I am unfimiliar with Norton. Are you still getting the "Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed" error? Let us know. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Thank you again for the extended help. I'm going to give the suggestions a try when I get home from work tomorrow morning. It's my last day for the week. I'll be able to devote more time to this. The main reason I haven't been inside the case as much as you guys have been suggesting, is I'm not very knowledgable with hardware and it's a bit intimidating, i must admit.
I'll give it another look at approx. 8 am EST though. Again, thanks tons. |
