back up hard drive?

i'm trying to back up the C drive on my laptop to an external drive. I tried simply copying the C drive to a folder on the E drive but there are folders it won't copy because they are being used by something? Anyone have any ideas??

Hi

What folders is it that "refuse" to be copied?
Shut all other applications down while copying the files.

i would suggest just doing a regular windows backup instead of trying to copy the drive. You will miss files if you just do a copy to another drive/folder.
