It repeatedly showed the "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation." error and then the problems occur. PC randomly freezes, most noticebly when I'm playing a PC game. Sometimes it will freeze up even when I'm not playing. I cannot access ctrl + alt + delete, the sound dies and I am forced to restart by holding shutdown key on my PC. I've got AVG AV, and SP protection - I did a scan from both before formatting, no errors. When I formatted I did it quick, because last time I did it slow and it made no difference- This is my second harddisk now that shows this error, and its frustrating because this is a new drive thats never been used. When I installed Windows I had CD ready with all the drivers and I restarted my PC everytime I was prompted. 1. Service Packs ( Latest SP3 ) 2. Direct X ( 9.0c Latest ) 3. Motherboard Drivers ( Asus and Nforce ) 4. Graphics Card Drivers ( Latest from Nvidia Site ) 5. And the rest of the drivers / updates via Windows update. I ensured everything was done perfectly and smoothly, and yet this hard disk error haunts me yet again. What am I doing wrong? I can not contact Alienware for support because the computer warranty is no longer available and because was a gift from a friend. I can sell the computer, but I'm positive there is nothing wrong with it - I believe its just because I'm not to computer savvy. This is the second post I've made about this error, before I was getting BSOD constantly- that is not the case now. I've pinpointed the error to the "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation." error- I just need to find out what it causing it and how to resolve it. I am tired of reformatting the PC.

There are no significant errors in the Error Report Log except the DCOM one, which I heard is benign. I'm not sure how to run a WD diagnostic tool though, could you please elaborate on that? So what causes my computer to freeze up randomly? I've pretty much covered almost everything, from cooling to switching drives to spyware / Malware / virus / Trojans.. I'm running out of options. Though I have notice something, whenever the PC freezes I notice the light which indicates the HD is processing something turns off. As if the HD is not connected. |

Re: Windows XP Disk Failure.
Heya Mike, here are the results of the HD test following your instructions. Seems like everything is clean. So what else could cause Windows to freeze randomly? I mean, it doesn't happen all the time... Hasn't frozen at all today, yesterday it froze twice. Maybe I'm missing a driver somewhere? It usually freezes when I'm playing games, sometimes it freezes if I'm not.. Just totally random, but with my experience it seems like it has a higher chance of freezing when I'm playing games. And my PC is high-end it shouldn't have problems running games like WoW, AoE III or CoD4 - Its frozen with WoW / AOE III, once with WoW, twice with AoE III, none with CoD4. Just doesn't make any sense. And its frozen maybe twice when I'm just doing normal things like surfing. Strange thing is though- and this might help- I have the ability to TAB still, I can tab between my browsers, but they are all frozen.. I can't access Windows Start Key, and Ctrl Alt Delete doesn't work. What could cause Ctrl+Alt+Delete to not work? I haven't gotten a BSOD at all. My error report seems clean.

Re: Windows XP Disk Failure.
I'm reading your system and you have 4 1gb sticks of memory installed? Remove all the memory and reseat one stick in the #1 slot, download and run Memtest86 on the one stick for 3 passes. Be sure to set the memory to run "by spd" in the bios. Check the default memory voltage for the motherboard and adjust it to run the memory at its rated speed. We can go from there. Mike
Download the pre-compiled version 3.4a for windows and have a floopy disk handy. http://www.memtest86.com/

Re: Windows XP Disk Failure.
Heya 2pistolpacker I found out why my PC was freezing, after I disabled my SLI from the dual nvidias I havent had any problems with the PC, infact its been running very smoothly without any problems... But the computer was built to handle SLI, why would SLI be a problem now?

Re: Windows XP Disk Failure.
I have read of similar HDD errors, some had success reinstalling a newer version of the motherboards chipset drivers. Do not install the SW IDE drivers from Nvidia, Microsofts drivers work better. Then retest the SLI. Mike
