EEK! Help installing SATA HDD on IDE motherboard

Please can someone help!! I purchased a SATA hard drive to put into my pc as the old hard drive started showing as empty even though it was full. My motherboard only has IDE ports so i bought a SATA/IDE adaptor which only seems to be suitable for putting an IDE hard drive onto a SATA board. Ive put the adaptor onto the motherboard, connected the cable from the adaptor to the Sata hard drive and i bought a molex to SATA cable to power the hard drive. After putting this together the pc will load and goes to boot from CD but when i go to set up windows it says there is no hard drive. I also tried attatching the cable that came with the adaptor from the adaptor to molex, this makes the LED light come on on the adaptor that is still plugged into the motherboard but unfortunately the PC does not boot up at all when i do this. What am i doing wrong?!?!? Please help someone...
