Second HDD
Hi everyone
OK here's my problem: Recently purchased a second SATA HDD, went to install and it seemed to conflict with the Original one. Tried all the SATA ports with no luck, changed cable still no joy would not boot to windows with the second HDD in. Looked in BIOS and everything is set to Auto... Right I thought it was a SATA problem, then bought a 320GB IDE HDD. connected it to IDE cable (Took out existing second DVD ROM). Not recognised, then tried an IDE SATA converter still not recognised. Would boot to Windows ok but soes not appear in My Computer? It seems that my MoBo will not detect any secondary HDD no matter what configuration I try. Have tried (where appropriate) selecting Slave, Cable Select, etc still no joy?! I have an Asus p5B mobo, 160GB Samsung SATA HDD, Windows XP Home (SP2), LG DVD Multi Drive, Intel Core 2 Duo and 3GB RAM, BIOS is JMMicron I think? Any help would be greatfully received you guys! Many thanks & best wishes |

Re: Second HDD
Hi,
You have to format a new drive before it's visible in "My computer". To do that - Open Disk management in XP: Right click "My computer" > choose "Manage" > Disk Management. In disk management > Right click the new drive > choose "New partition" in the menu and follow the wizard that will start. |

Hi
Well, that seems to have done the trick! Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction & what a learning curve! **NOTE for Others** When in Disk Management the option to 'Partition' was greyed out. There was also a red error symbol next to the disk number... The fix was to right click on the disc number and Initialise, this then allowed me to Partition the new drive via the Wizard! Eneles - Have you any idea why when I installed the second SATA drive it would not boot into Windows though? Thanks once again! Russell |

Re: Second HDD
Good news.
![]() Concerning the second SATA drive: Probably an incorrect setting in BIOS that makes the computer look for Windows on the wrong HDD. In the Main menu > Configure SATA as IDE. In "Boot device priority" > the "old" SATA drive should (of course) be #2 - after CD/DVD. RAID should be disabled. What was the error message when you installed the second HDD? |

Re: Second HDD
Hi again
Righto, after trying again this weekend. I encountered the following: After installing second SATA HDD the restart showed both HDD then had a error message 'Reboot & Select Proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media In selected Boot Device' I then took out my second HDD and it would not even boot into windows, kept on 'looping' and restarting. The only way to get Windows to reload was to do a Repair. (SATA Configred as IDE and boot priority is CD, HDD (existing one!) BIOS is American Megatrends V2.58 & JMicron SATA Controller appears? Is it me or is this really odd!! Cheers again everyone |
