2nd Hard Drive different OS
HI:
I have a Dell 690 Precision with 2 Xeon Woodcrest dual core processors. I installed 10gig of memory but my XP Pro 32 bit OS will only recog 3gig of the memory. I run Corel Painter X and Photo for my digital graphics and would like to take advantage of all the memory and run XP Pro 64 (I have a full copy) on a second drive have a WD Caviar SE 16 500g SATA 300MBps ready to go in. How do I set it up as a second bootable drive with XP64 on it and will I be able to run programs from the existing drive or reistall. Sorry i know thats alot of questions and info. Please help. Thanks Till |

Re: 2nd Hard Drive different OS
Hi, welcome to TSF.
![]() Start your 32-bit XP installation. Insert the 64-bit disc and choose "New installation" - later on you will be asked where you want to install (the new HDD, of course). A dual boot configuration will be created - when you start your computer it will ask you which OS you want to run. |

Re: 2nd Hard Drive different OS
Thanks for the response Nocholas! I'm not sure what you mean by start 32 bit installation? Also do I set the new HDD as a slave? I believe that It cannot be set as primary with the existing drive already primary and running the 32 bit XP.

Re: 2nd Hard Drive different OS
I'll try to explain it a little better.
![]() The SATA drive doesn't have master/slave settings, so you don't have to worry about that. But make sure your old drive is the first in BIOS hard disk boot order. Start your old XP installation (the 32-bit). When XP is up and running - insert the 64-bit XP disc. It should auto-start the installation process. During setup - choose "New installation" - later on you will be asked where you want to install XP 64-bit (the new HDD, of course). A dual boot configuration will be created - when you start your computer it will ask you which OS you want to run. |
