Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

I would try installing the drive into a USB external enclosure / boot into windows first then connect the drive once windows is UP?

if you buy the external enclosure from a box store / you can return the enclosure if it doesnt work for you ?

if you know a reasonable PC shop, some of them will do this for you ??

but i would agree with Eneles, I think you PCB is defective

I will try to find one, you may have to buy a used but working drive off ebay, then remove the PCB from the good drive and put it on the bad drive, that is what I have been stuck doing most of the time in your situtation

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

Wow, you guys have been busy in my absence. That's a lot of info to look at and absorb. I will start momentarily :)
Re: model number of HDD - The info I gave you, I got from a WDC website search - but the actual hard drive reads differently:
MDL: WD2000JB-53EVA0
Date: 15 Dec 2003
DCM: HSBHCVJAA
Product of Malaysia
IDE first set # 2061-001179
Firmware (I think) WM AEH 244 1730
Thanks, now I will go back and look at all those links you sent me!

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

OK, I found an exact match here: http://cgi.ebay.com/PCB-board-for-WD...sid=p1638.m118
That's about a $100 gamble -
1 - if it is a bad PCB will the external enclosure idea work if I don't replace the PCB?
2 - is the PCB a plug only or will I need to solder?
3 - I have a local computer shop right around the corner but he is a one man show and stuff goes in and never comes out sometimes
4 - can anyone recommend Best Buy Geek Squad for a problem of this nature?

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

See if you can find a used HDD that matches yours, and use the PCB from that - probably cheaper.
If the PCB is bad an external enclosure won't help.
It will probably need soldering.
I don't know Geek Squad (not from the US).

I personally am not impressed with the geek squad, but you will have to access them for yourself

the PCB comes out simply by removing a few drives on the bottom of the drive (tip the drive over in your hand, the PCB is the little green board that is part of the IDE cable connection)

after removing the screws, the pcb will pop right out of its "socket pin connection, no soldering required on newer drives like yours.

as for cost, only you can determine the value of the data on the drive ?

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

if patient, you could look hard on ebay for a used drive, just verify with the seller ahead of purchase that the revision & firmware etc etc etc match

I would expect to pick one of those drives up for around $45.00

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

Well, patience and determination are among my fortes :) I figured my SimpleDrive external drive (you know, the backup that failed in the software dept) was sitting there being useless and it looked an awful lot like the external USB enclosure you speak of so I took the screws out and plugged in my old HDD - the jumpers on the SimpleDrive were set as master 0 so I set the WD HDD as master, booted windows then plugged in the USB. It recognized and installed new USB drive but still windows explorer nor disk management sees the drive. So, I guess we are on to the PCB replacement which will take some time. I feel a little better about replacing the PCB since no soldering... The value of the lost files are personally priceless (but I wouldn't entrust them to just anyone) or I wouldn't be trying so hard to get them back. You guys are great and very helpful. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks, Judy

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

Bad news.... the PCB arrived Thursday and I installed it and positioned the drive as slave first, then as secondary master - basically same results as before. The only thing I can report different is the BIOS will "see" the bad drive but reports wrong model # and size. Bad drive still just spins up, ticks about 5 times, clicks, spins down, then it will try again and again, keeps master drive from completing boot to windows - gets to windowsXP black screen and status bar just repeats....

Advanced>IDE Configuration>
IDE primary master =WDC WD300EB 30022 MB
IDE primary slave = none
IDE secondary master = WDC WD2500 8455 MB (it is a WD2000, 200 GB)
IDE secondary slave = none

I won't give up, any suggestions? Best data recovery company?
Judy

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

if the bios sees the drive you have a damn good chance of recovery

you may need to install the bad drive into an external USB enclosure so you can connect the drive after windows is up and running'

then use getdataback to recover your data

here is a trial version

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2773.html

check your PM's (private messages)

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

I tried the USB enclosure and it found and loaded the hardware but still can not see drive. I also downloaded getdataback - it sees a USB drive when I have my jump drive plugged in but nothing with the HDD in USB enclosure in same USB port. I even tried plugging in the HDD as secondary drive after master booted to windows. It spun up but getdataback doesn't see it...

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

I wonder if the conflict is not with your boot drive and the other drive

if the bios sees the drive thats promising

try booting into the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic utility and see if you can scan the drive with that >>>>> when you attempt this, unplug the power plug from your boot drive , then maybe you can avoid a possible conflict ?>>

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

OK, I downloaded WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Dos (CD) which gave me an .iso file which I burned to CD using Nero Burning Rom which should have created a boot CD. I set the BIOS to boot to CD only and unplugged both the hard drives. System does not see the CD as bootable - gives me option to press f1 to continue or f2 for setup. Here are the files it put on the CD:
autoexec.bat
command.com
dlgdiag5.exe
dlgdiag.txt
dlglice.txt
ibmdiag.com
ibmdos.com
Does that look like a boot CD? I followed the steps from here to create the CD. http://www.bay-wolf.com/burnimage6.htm

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

you dont need to do all that stuff

open nero start smart / then go to the burn image button / then from within the burn image command you can navigate to your download ISO file

thats it!

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

Much easier! but no luck...

with 200g (bad) HDD as slave on ribbon with good drive unplugged:
no drive found error/status code 0120
hit any key to continue
a:/
I typed the exe dlgdiag5 and got the same message, then computer just powers down like it is on limited power when booting to the cd.

with 30g (good) drive connected as primary master alone, will boot cd, goes through user agreement, loads diagnostic program, shows the 30g, I chose select drive, screen briefly shows drive not tested, then powers down by itself

with 200g connected as primary master, 30g disconnected - nothing, blinks cd light, spins hard drive, does not boot to cd, goes to black screen with blinking cursor, machine does not shut down on its own this time

with 200g connected as secondary slave, 30g disconnected-
message - no boot device detected, insert system disk and press f1 to continue f2 to setup. I go to setup and it sees HDD and CD, exit with changes to black screen with blinking cursor, I have to turn it off

Did I miss anything?

Good news (I guess) is BIOS still sees the 200g in various configurations just reports wrong model and size...

Is there a number/code on the new PCB?
Is it the same as the old one?

Re: Trying to recover files from WD HDD

Hi Nicholas,

The seller represented it for a WD2000JB-53EVA0 (matches mine)

The white sticker with bar code -

on original PCB:
2061-001179-000 DG XW 1K27 0Z66 8 0002240 4242

on replacement PCB:
2061-001179-000 DG XW 1K27 2JJX 9 0006250 4256
