hard drive problem

When I was installing win xp os on Compaq laptop it shows a message hard disk is not found check the hard disk is powerd on or do the diagonostics program of the manufacturer of the laptop.
I did the diagonostics program and it completed but I still got the same message of hard disk is not found what could be the problem tell me

What model is the Compaq?
When do you receive the error message - at the beginning of installation or later?

in addition to the other info requested, why are you reinstalling? If you were having problems, maybe its related.
